About Chester le Street

Chester le Street has some evidence of Iron Age use of the River Wear, but the Roman fort Concangis gives the town it's name. 'Chester' comes from the Latin castra.

There is a Roman road which runs from north to south through the town. It is now called Front Street. Chester le Street is in the very north of County Durham, on the River Wear.
