The northern part of Sussex is close enough to London for London based musicians to travel south and to be hired to play for events. One woman gets to the coastal region, then one is more reliant on the band who play and live in the county, of which there are many excellent ones. The downs of West Sussex, heavily wooded, come within a few miles of Chichester. Hidden in their folds are little churches, many dating from the i2th and ijth centuries, and tiny villages with houses of flint, half-timbered brickwork and thatch. Many of the villages grew up under the protective wing of great estates such as Goodwood, which preserve large stretches of unspoilt downland countryside.

Brighton is an exhilarating town of spectacular contrasts. Graceful Georgian and late-Victorian houses co-exist with the extravaganza of the Royal Pavilion; oysters in the Lanes with cockles and whelks on the Pier; political party meetings with day-trippers' outings; bracing rides along the Promenade on open-deck buses with claustrophobic nights in the gambling casinos; antique shops with 'what-the-butler-saw' machines. The blend of culture and candy floss is Brighton's fascination.
It all began as a tiny fishing hamlet on the shore, with a farming settlement on the high ground behind. The fishing quarter was almost entirely swallowed by the sea and is reduced now to a few narrow lanes off Pool Valley. The farming village probably followed the intricate spider's web of narrow streets which today are called the Lanes and lined with antique shops.
The dual village of Brighthelmstone changed its face and character in the mid-18th century when Dr Richard Russell, a Sussex man, proclaimed the value of sea bathing and sea air and earned for the town its contemporary nickname of'Doctor Brighton'.

The Prince of Wales, son of George III, visited Brighton in 1783 and commissioned Henry Holland to build him a Royal Pavilion there in Classical style, with a 'Chinese' interior. When the Prince became Regent in 1812 he engaged John Nash, the architect who laid out Regent's Park in London and the terraces round it, to enlarge the Pavilion into the present riotously extravagant building. As a result of the Prince's interest, Brighton became the leading resort in England, despite derision from the Prince's contemporaries, who attacked the appearance of the Royal Pavilion; the author William Cobbett described it as a combination of 'a square box, a large Norfolk turnip and four onions'.
Modern Brighton is one of Britain's leading seaside resorts, with a shingle beach and three open-air swimming pools, a long promenade and two piers. Beside the Palace Pier is one of the best aquariums in England, complete with performing dolphins. The i4-mile Volks Electric Railway runs from the aquarium to Black Rock swimming pool, with a stop on the way at a children's playground. Adjoining the Lanes is a modern piazza with seats, flower beds and a restaurant, which has tables outdoors in summer.

Worthing is a popular holiday and residential town, with some Regency houses and squares and many London commuters' homes. It was a fishing hamlet until Princess Amelia, youngest daughter of George III, visited it in 1798. In the next 14 years, Worthing started to become the flourishing seaside resort it is today. It has safe sea bathing, a pier, 4 miles of promenades, concert halls and two good theatres.
Paintings in Worthing Museum include many early 19th-century and Victorian watercolours; and a half-timbered 16th-century house at West Tarring, on the north-west outskirts, has a collection of 19th-century 'bygones', and exhibits of local interest.

Long Furlong Barn Clapham, Worthing, West Sussex, BN13 3XN, East Sussex
this is abuttressed, tiled roof barn, it was built in the 1880s and is complete with sweeping views over undulating fields. Venues approved for civil marriage ceremonies and civil partnerships, and can hold up to hundred and 20 guests, which is nice number for a wedding ceilidh or barn dance. In this case it was a string quartet that were playing, and as in most original barn, the acoustics are good because of the hard walls and floors and high ceilings. It's strange to think that these old barns were built purely for housing grain, implements and animals, and there was no thought of acoustics from the builders who put these barns up, quite often just piled high with very little planning, and often without an architect being involved. So what has gone wrong with architecture and the training of architects, that when they try in modern buildings and hotels venues, so often they get the acoustics drastically wrong. Modern hotels are often completely dead and suck up every bit of sound from a string quartet, a classical guitarist or harpist, while so many modern village halls are over reverberant, and all one gets his cacophony of echoes from the band crossing with shouts from happy guests bouncing off walls and ceilings in all directions. So why is it that somebody can throw up an agricultural barn, not meant for music, and produce a building that is usually superb for music, whereas architects who have gone to university, at great expense to society or themselves, so rarely seem to be able to produce buildings that are actually good for people and conversation and music? Ah well, that's the way it is I suppose.

Arundel climbs from the River Arun to the battlemented walls, massive keep and turrets of Arundel Castle, above which flics the flag of the Duke of Norfolk, Earl Marshal of England. The castle is flanked by the late 14th-century Church of St Nicholas and the Roman Catholic Cathedral of St Philip Neri, built by the isth Duke of Norfolk in 1868-9. The entire view from across the river has a Gothic, fairy-tale effect.
The castle was built by Roger Montgomery, Earl of Shrewsbury, just after the Conquest, to defend the valley against sea raiders. It was added to in 1170 and 1190 and was almost ruined in 1643 by Cromwell's cannon fired from the steeple of St Nicholas's Church. The castle was rebuilt in the i8th century, and extensively restored in 1890.
The town of Arundel is mostly Victorian but there are many 18th-century houses, and Mount Pleasant and Bond Street have many flint-walled cottages. Potter's Museum in the High Street was originally at Bramber, and is well known for its nursery rhyme tableaux incorporating stuffed animals. Dominating the High Street is the Norfolk Arms, a splendid 18th-century coaching inn.

Eastbourne was developed by the 7th Duke of Devonshire when he inherited the small village in 1834. He wanted to build something totally different from the extrovert gaiety of nearby Brighton, and created an elegant place with fine parks and gardens, wide tree-lined roads and grass in long, trim stretches.

Alfriston is a village in the Cuckmere valley, full of old houses—notably the Star Inn and the 14th-century Clergy House, the first building acquired by the National Trust, in 1896. Once a haunt of smugglers, it is a useful centre from which to explore the Cuckmere Valley down to Seaford or up to Hailsham and beyond. Lullington, just across the river, has one of England's smallest churches—only 16 ft square. There is a fine 5-mile walk along the top of the downs to West Firle.

Steyning is a medieval, quietly prosperous town of old gabled houses. According to legend the village began in the 8th century, when St Cuthman pushed his invalid mother in a wheelbarrow from Devon. The barrow broke down at Steyning, so Cuthman stayed there and built a wooden church. The present church, dating from the 12th century, is one of the noblest in West Sussex. A track leads to the top of Steyning Round Hill, from which there is a fine view over the Adur Valley. Other walks climb the downs to Cissbury Ring and Chanctonbury Ring, where a beech wood, planted in 1760, stands in an oval prehistoric earthwork.
