Birmingham, at the centre of the West Midlands, is very fortunate in having Symphony Hall – a venue that ranks amongst the best concert halls in the world. They also have the resident orchestra, The City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra. But Symphony Hall isn't just about classical music, as it puts on jazz, folk, pop and more. The hall has adjustable acoustics, huge wall panels that can be moved to absorb or reflect sound to make the whole equally good for a full symphony orchestra, a string quartet or jazz band. Seats are comfortable and tiered, to the extent where I find the top balcony one is quite terrifying as well and looks down from vertiginous heights. But it wasn't always like this.

In the 1970s the CBSO performed in the town hall. Acoustics want to bad, but vision was hopeless. Seats were all at the same level, and you are lucky if you could see much of the orchestra or the conductor. The seat were also incredibly uncomfortable. I did find a solution though. There was a balcony that was closed to the public, which had comfortable armchairs and settees on it. On one occasion I was not feeling well during the concert, probably exacerbated by the hideously uncomfortable seating. One of the ushers kindly suggested an interval that I go up onto the balcony I get more air. It was wonderful. You could see the orchestra, is a music better, and sit comfortably. After that, for concerts, always tried to sneak upstairs when no one was looking, and more often than not got away with it.

This was shortly after I'd left university, where had been playing in a barn dance band, the string quartet, a ceilidh band and an absolutely superb chamber Orchestra. When I moved to the West Midlands though, I found it quite difficult to find good music. It was okay if you went into the centre of Birmingham, but I was living out the other side of Wolverhampton. Not far from Wolverhampton and Birmingham you may think, but in the 1970s even finding one's way into and out of the centre of Birmingham was a major expedition. I don't know what is wrong with the area, but they don't seem to have invented road signs. This was in the days before satnav of course, and well after the Second World War when all road signs were removed in case of an invasion. The rest of the world had replaced road signs, but not the West Midlands. It was a secretive area all to itself. Outsiders from the south of England would definitely welcome. Unless you'd been born in the area and knew the roads because it was in your genetics, then you are lost.

Walsall had an orchestra, the Arian Symphony Orchestra. Even navigating one's way as far as Walsall was quite an achievement, the worse it gets music. The orchestra was keen, enthusiastic, and had some decent players, but is rehearsal venue was something else. It was in the offices built into part of a black country drop forge, so that your accompanied by the rhythm of the forging hammers, which might or might not be in time with the first movement of Beethoven's fifth Symphony! So navigating through the signless streets to Walsall, spending an evening playing music to the rhythm of a drop forge – with the floors and music stand bouncing to the rhythm of the hammers – and navigating back home again, was quite an ordeal. What musicians will do for their art!!

Bewdley is one of England's finest old towns, with a Georgian church and many i8th-century houses, especially in Load Street. Tickenhill House, on a hill above the town, has a brick facade added in 1738 to the remains of a Tudor royal palace. The town stands on the fringe of the Wyre Forest, and a 3^-mile nature trail starts near the Duke William Inn.

Until the late i8th century, when the canals were built, Stourport was a quiet village. Then it became a bustling commercial centre, the busiest inland port in the Midlands after Birmingham. Today the canals are used mainly for pleasure boats. For the tourist on foot there are some fine Georgian houses and an iron bridge built in 1870.

Family camping party with marquee The CT Ceilidh /Barn dance Band ref: 6206

Cleobury Mortimer is a market town which derives its name from the great Norman family of Mortimer who established themselves here in 1086. Hugh de Mortimer built a fortress in 1160 which Henry II later demolished; the earthworks can still be seen near the church. In front of the mid 16thcentury Talbot Hotel, once a coaching inn, are the remains of an ancient market cross, where the body of Henry VIII's brother Arthur was laid during the journey from Ludlow to Worcester Cathedral, where he is buried.

Half-timbered and 18th-century houses line the tree-shaded main street. It is believed that William Langland, author of 'Piers Plowman', was born here in the I4th century and the church has a window in his memory.

Dudley is an ancient industrial town of the West Midlands, rises on ridges between 400 and 800 ft above sea level, and offers broad vistas, to the north over rolling Staffordshire hills, to the west over the Severn Valley, and to the south over the pasturelands of Hereford and Worcester. The ruins of Dudley Castle, with some walls 8 ft thick, date from the I3th century, and rise above magnificent woodlands. Pits that were once workings for minerals are now used to accommodate Dudley Zoo's wild animals. A chairlift carries visitors from the castle gates up the 18o-ft incline to the zoo, which has one of the finest sea-lion pools in thecountry. In a wooded valley below Castle Hill are the ruins of a Norman priory.

The Central Museum has a fine collection of geological specimens featuring local limestone and coal fossils, and items are being collected for a museum of Black Country life and industry. The Church of St Thomas the Apostle is a dominating building in Regency Gothic, built in 1817. It has a graceful spire and above the marble altar is a carving of St Thomas by Samuel Joseph, who also has works in Westminster Abbey.

Wren's Nest Hill, a mile north-west of Dudley Castle, is a National Nature Reserve which also contains fossils of creatures at least 300 million years old.

Wolverhampton is the  so-called 'Capital of the Black Country', now famous for its iron and brass foundries, possessed an important monastery before the Norman Conquest, and by 1258 was a thriving market town. Since the Second World War, many unattractive buildings of the Industrial Revolution have been removed by intelligent new planning and redevelopment. The Mander Centre and Wulfrun shopping precincts were early shopping centres that were considered a tribute to contemporary British architects, and there are fine parks, art galleries and museums. The large, mainly 15th-century parish church of St Peter, built of red stone, has a notable octagonal font and stone pulpit, and a carved lion on the balustrade of the lofty staircase.

On the Penn road to the south-west there is rural scenery and good walking country towards Himley, 6 miles away.

Moseley Old Hall, 4 miles north, is a fine Elizabethan house with many secret passages. Charles II hid there after the Battle of Worcester in 1651—the bed he slept in is on show. The hall, now owned by the National Trust, has a splendid collection of furniture, portraits, documents and treasures belonging to the Whitgreave family, who sheltered the king. The garden retains its formal 17th-century charm.

Wightwick Manor, 3 miles west, has a Jacobean appearance, though it was not built until 1887. Inside are some fine fabrics and wallpapers by William Morris, the 19th-century decorative artist. There is also some beautiful stained glass, much of it designed by C. E. Kernpe. The house is rich in paintings by Rossetti, Burne-Jones, Ford Madox Brown, Watts, Ruskin and Millais. The gardens are laid out with terraces and pools, and some splendid Irish yews and golden holly trees.

To the south-east of Stourbridge are the hills of Clent and Lickey, with woodlands, shrubs, pools and pleasant walking country rising to 1000 ft. There are farmlands between Redditch and Bromsgrove, and hills stretch along the Shropshire border to the west. Downstream from Stourport, pleasant dairy-farming land borders the River Severn as it widens on its way towards Worcester.

Kinver is a small border town surrounded by beautiful wooded countryside. Some fine old houses survive in the main street, and the parish church, standing high above the town, has good Norman as well as i4thand 15th-century features. Steep paths lead to the top of Kinver Edge, a dramatic hill that dominates the town. Its 198 acres of heath and woodland are National Trust property. Halfway up is Holy Austin Rock, a huge sandstone formation with cave-like excavations, probably washed out by water over millions of years, and once used as dwellings by vanished tribes and hermits. From the summit, a perfect spot for picnics, can be seen four ranges of hills, the Clents, the Cotswolds, the Malverns and the Clees.

Cannock Chase is an oasis of forest land and heath on the doorstep of south Staffordshire's Black Country. It is the remnant of the vast hunting ground which covered much of Staffordshire in Norman times. There are miles of lovely walks through forest land, particularly glorious in spring and autumn.Brocton Coppice, to the northwest, still has some of the original great oaks remaining. Good viewpoints include the 6oo-ft Coppice Hill, from which the Clee Hills, 30 miles to the south-west in Shropshire, are often visible. The Chase has a large herd of fallow deer, descendants of those which escaped the arrows of the Plantagenets. Foxes and badgers abound, and lizards slither over rocks on the heathlands. Bird life ranges from meadow-pipits to buzzards, and woodpeckers and nuthatches are common.

German and Commonwealth cemeteries on Cannock Chase commemorate the dead of two World Wars; the German cemetery includes the graves of the first Zeppelin crew shot down over Britain in the First World War.

Lichfield has become a modern city, but still charming cathedral city, dominated by the cathedral's three graceful sandstone- spires, known as 'The Ladies of the Vale'. The spacious Close is still a haven of peace in which gracious I4th and 15th century houses, forming the Vicar's Close, surround a stretch of vivid green lawn.

The first cathedral was consecrated in AD 700 by St Chad, but the present building was mainly completed between 1195 and 1325. The cathedral's west front is rich with sandstone statuary, and five statues on the north-western tower and the bas-relief of Christ in Majesty above the central pillar are from the original cathedral. The stained-glass windows in the Lady Chapel are among the best in England. They came from a dissolved Cistercian abbey in Herckenrode, in Belgium, early in the igth century. In the cathedral library is one of the finest illuminated manuscripts in Europe. It includes the complete gospels of St Matthew and St Mark, and is called St Chad's Gospels, in memory of the missionary who became Bishop of Mercia in AD 669.

The house on the corner of Bread-market Street where Samuel Johnson was born in 1709 is now a Johnsonian Museum. In the cobbled square is a statue of Dr Johnson, and on the other side of the square is a monument to James Boswell, his biographer. David Garrick, the actor, lived in Lichfield with his family, and in 1736 studied Latin and Greek under Samuel Johnson, who was then a schoolmaster at a grammar school. Another famous man born in Lichfield was Elias Ashmole, the antiquarian who left his priceless collection of antiquities to Oxford University. They are now in the Ashmolean Museum at Oxford.

Bridgnorth is an ancient market town on a red sandstone ridge. The LowTown is connected to the High Town by a winding main road, a cliff railway and flights of steep steps. The Low Town, on the banks of the Severn, has some attractive old houses, including Diamond Hall, built in the late 17th century by Colonel Roger Pope with the winnings of his horse Diamond.

The High Town has a foreign air about it, with stepped streets lined by red-tiled houses with tall chimneys. The tower of the late Norman castle keep leans at 17 degrees from the perpendicular—three times the angle of the Leaning Tower of Pisa. There are views across the Severn from the walk around the castle grounds. The High Street has many 18th-century houses and inns, as well as earlier buildings. The Italianate parish church of St Mary Magdalene was built in 1794 by Thomas Telford, best remembered for his bridge engineering. It stands among Georgian houses in East Castle Street. The town hall was built in 1652 and incorporates materials from an ancient barn.

Claverley occupies the rich agricultural land of south-east Salop (Shropshire) is dominated by the limestone ridge of Wenlock Edge, which the poet A. E. Housman described in 'A Shropshire Lad': 'On Wenlock Edge, the wood's in trouble; His forest fleece the Wrekin heaves; The gale, it plies the saplings double; And thick on Severn snow the leaves.' Between  Wenlock Edge  and  the  twin  hills  of Titterstone Glee and Brown Clee to the south-east, the River Corve winds through beautiful Corve Dale, which has a wealth of attractive isth and 16th-century manor farms. The Corve joins the valley of the River Teme near Ludlow, where the ruins of the massive nth-century sandstone castle stand out high above the river like a picture in a child's story book.
