this is a relatively modern construction, though you wouldn't think so by looking at it. Built between 1928 and 1932, it was a family home for 30 years, and boy did they know how to locate it. The view from the woodlands and drives looking past the house to the lake is splendid. This old house as may from Bath stone, but even though it was built in the early 1900s, they went to the effort of installing a Cotswold stone roof, which must have been astonishingly expensive even in those days. In Congresbury, tradition has it that St Congar built a wattle church here and then, wanting shade, thrust a yew stick into the ground, where it sprouted like Joseph of Arimathea's staff at Glastonbury. The church which stands there today has one of the finest old vicarages in Britain, dating from the 15th century, with moulded beams. Just south of the AA box a footpath leads through Ball Wood to Wring-ton Hill, a 500 ft high viewpoint.

The county town of Somerset, Taunton, is a lively commercial centre, but with much of interest for the tourist. It lies in the Vale of Taunton Deane, on the River Tone. The restored Norman castle (open to the public) is the grandest of the town's public buildings; it contains a museum, and its great hall, on the far side of the courtyard, was a scene of Judge Jeffreys's Bloody Assizes, in which vengeance was wreaked upon the Duke of Monmouth's followers after his defeat in 1685 at the Ba,ttle of Sedgemoor. Most of the rebels were deported to the West Indies; hundreds of others were hanged. The parish church, St Mary's, and the nearby Church of St James, are noted for their splendid towers (rebuilt in the I9th century). Other buildings include Gray's Almshouses (1635) in East Street; the old grammar school (i5th and i6th centuries) which now forms part of the Municipal Buildings in Corporation Street; the Octagon Chapel in Middle Street, opened by Wesley in 1776; and a well-preserved medieval leper hospital marooned amid the traffic in Hamilton Road. On the outskirts of the town, Wilton has an attractive small church and Wilton House, the birthplace of Alexander Kinglake, author of Eathen, the famous Victorian book about travel in the East.

Keinton Mandeville’s main street of somewhat austere houses is interesting as the birthplace of Sir Henry Irving, the Victorian actor-manager; his house, marked by a plaque, is one of a row facing the baker's shop. Irving, the son of a local tradesman, achieved fame at the age of 33 when he played in The Bells at London's Lyceum Theatre. He was the first actor to be knighted, and his ashes are in Westminster Abbey.

Somerton is a town attractively situated on the River Cary; the buildings round the marketplace constitute one of the most appealing townscapes in Somerset. The octagonal market cross was rebuilt in 1673. The church and some 16th-century houses on the north side of the market-place face the 18th-century town hall and some houses built on the site of Somerton Castle; fragments of the castle are said to be incorporated in the White Hart Hotel. Hinton St George village has a row of handsome stone houses and a medieval cross with a carving of St John the Baptist. Ilminster is a busy market town at the foot of the Black Down Hills, whose highest slopes (800 ft) look down at the town from across the River Isle. Several of the houses round the market square are 18th century, and the old grammar school (now a girls' school) dates from 1586. Where the High Street joins North Street, an old road climbs Beacon Hill, from which, it is said, 30 churches can be seen in fine weather. Barrington Court, 3 miles north-east of the town, was built in 1514-20 and is a fine example of an early Tudor manor house, with striking spiral chimneys.

For centuries the small harbour at Watchet served the regions of Exmoor and the Quantocks. Coleridge chose it as the port of embarkation for his Ancient Mariner: 'Here', he told Wordsworth, 'is where he shall set out on his fateful voyage.' The harbour's importance declined in the igth century, but it is still used by more than 100 ships a year; most of them bring wood and wood pulp from the Baltic and wine from Spain and Portugal, and export scrap metal and waste paper. The town is also a quiet seaside resort, with fine cliffs to the west and a sandy beach. To the south-west are the remains of 12th-century Cleeve Abbey, with its fine refectory and gatehouse. On the road to Williton is the 13th-century parish church dedicated to St Decuman, who was said to have presided at the marriage of King Arthur.

Minehead is the most westerly town in Somerset, and also one of its most popular seaside resorts. Situated around a wide, curving bay in the mouth of the Bristol Channel, it is a place for enjoyable bathing— although there is a long walk to the sea at low tide. It also has a children's bathing pool on the sands and a well-equipped modern swimming pool. Another attraction is the Model Village, encircled by a miniature railway. Mine-head has a cheerful, noisy atmosphere, in contrast with the stillness of nearby Exmoor. The oldest part of the town, known as Quay Town, rises to the slopes of North Hill, at the western end of the bay. Quay Town's harbour, dating back to 1616, is used by steamers making pleasure trips along the coast to Lynmouth and llfracombe.

Bridgwater is an industrial centre and formerly a busy port on the River Parrett. A tidal bore sweeps up the river when the tide is flowing. The town was used by the rebel Duke of Monmouth as his headquarters before the Battle of Sedgemoor (1685). The duke was proclaimed king here as well as at Taunton, Robert Blake (1599-1657), Cromwell's great admiral, was born in Bridgwater; his house is now a museum. St Mary's Church, dating from the i4th century, is noted for its screenwork. Castle Street is worth seeing for its fine Georgian architecture.

For two years Coleridge lived in Nether Stowey in a cottage now owned by the National Trust; the poems he wrote in it include 'The Ancient Mariner' and 'Kubla Khan'. Adjoining the local church is Stowey Court, a manor house, with a fine gazebo (garden house). A stream flows down beside the road from the circular mound of a ruined castle, and the houses stand behind little bridges over the stream. Dodington Manor House, 2 miles to the north-west, dates from 1581. Above the village is Danesborough Camp, an oval high-banked prehistoric earthwork.
