Fishbourne
One of the major Roman relics in Britain lies just west of Chichester, on a well-signposted side road. Excavations have disclosed an important Roman palace occupied during the 2nd and 3rd centuries AD, during the peak period of the Roman occupation; it may have originally been the palace of Cogidubnus, the Briton made viceroy by the Romans. Sections of the walls, baths and heating system are visible, but the most memorable feature of the palace is its superb mosaic floors. One intricate panel, 17 ft square, has as its central medallion a winged boy astride a dolphin. There is an adjoining museum devoted to the history of the site and an imaginative portrayal of life in Roman Britain.

Amberley
A village with a ruined castle, a Norman church, thatched cottages, and gardens bright with flowers in summer. Amber-ley sprawls on a low ridge overlooking the Amberley Wrild Brooks—the name 'Wild' is derived from 'Weald'—which are 30 square miles of grazing marshes watered by the Arun, impassable for cars but ideal for walkers. The castle was built in 1380 for the Bishops of Chichester, and the ruined gatehouse and walls enclose an ancient manor house.

The South Saxons landed at Selsey in AD 477. So did St Wilfrid, when he arrived in Au68i to convert the Saxons to Christianity. He established a monastery,
which later became a cathedral; its site is now submerged. Roman and early British coins have been found on the beach. From Selsey Bill, the southernmost point in Sussex, there arc good views of the coast and across to the Isle of Wight.

Arundel
The town climbs from the River Arun to the battlemented walls, massive keep
and turrets of Arundel Castle, above which flics the flag of the Duke of Norfolk, Earl Marshal of England. The castle is flanked by the late 14th-century Church of St Nicholas and the Roman Catholic Cathedral of St Philip Neri, built by the isth Duke of Norfolk in 1868-9. The entire view from across the river has a Gothic, fairy-tale effect.
The castle was built by Roger Montgomery, Earl of Shrewsbury, just after the Conquest, to defend the valley against sea raiders. It was added to in 1170 and 1190 and was almost ruined in 1643 by Cromwell's cannon fired from the steeple of St Nicholas's Church. The castle was rebuilt in the i8th century, and extensively restored in 1890.
The town of Arundel is mostly Victorian but there are many 18th-century houses, and Mount Pleasant and Bond Street have many flint-walled cottages. Potter's Museum in the High Street was originally at Bramber, and is well known for its nursery rhyme tableaux incorporating stuffed animals. Dominating the High Street is the Norfolk Arms, a splendid 18th-century coaching inn.
