Hayle
A port and industrial centre on the estuary of the River Hayle. Behind the sand dunes, locally known as 'towans', is a popular bathing beach. The bay sweeps round to Godrevy Lighthouse, which Virginia Woolf featured in her famous novel To The Lighthouse. Phillack, facing Hayle across the canal, has a 15th-century church with a 5th-century inscribed stone in its porch. Stretching north-east are 3 miles of beaches and dunes.

Land's End
The westernmost point of the English mainland; a mass of granite cliffs which plunge with dramatic steepness into the sea. Not even the crowds of people and the cars and coaches which bring them can dispel the fascinating atmosphere of the place. For those who want to breathe in the Celtic 'other-worldliness' of Land's End to the full, the best times are dawn and dusk. Especially fine is the view of the Longships Lighthouse, on a rock 17 miles out to sea.

Marazion
A jumble of cottages set among winding streets and palm trees. The main road from Hayle runs through the village of Crowlas over a hill—and suddenly Mount's Bay comes into view. To the
left, St Michael's Mount with its superb castle rises out of the sea, and to the right the bay curves past Penzance and Penlee Point. At low tide a causeway runs from Marazion to St Michael's Mount.

Mousehole
A place which keeps its flavour of an old Cornish fishing village; colour-washed and granite houses surround the small harbour, which is draped with nets and crowded with fishermen. Here, in 1777, died Dolly Pentreath, supposedly the last person to speak the ancient Cornish language as her native tongue. Her grave is at Paul, on a hill above the village.

Newlyn
A busy fishing port, with old cottages climbing up a steep hill. Artists first 'discovered' Newlyn about 90 years ago. Dame Laura Knight, Stanhope Forbes and Frank Bramley were painters associated with the place. About 3 miles south-west is a group of Bronze Age stones. According to legend, they represent maidens turned to stone as a punishment for dancing on a Sunday.

Penzance
This popular resort, facing St Michael's Mount across the beautiful sweep of Mount's Bay, has a climate so mild that 2000-YEAR-OLD VILLAGE In the Iron Age village at Chysauster, the houses per roughly circular, and probably had roofs of stone or thatch, and open courtyards-palm trees and other sub-tropical plants thrive, particularly in the Morrab Gardens near the sea-front —murrub is the Cornish word for sea-shore. The town's two museums and library contain many records of Cornish history. Sir Humphry Davy, inventor of the miner's safety lamp, was born in Penzance in 1778, and a statue of him stands outside the market house in Market Jew Street.

Porthcurno
A pretty village, with a steeply shelving stretch of sand ideal for bathing. The cliff above the village belongs to the National Trust. On a cliff west of the beach is the open-air Minack Theatre, constructed in classical Greek style. Greek, Shakespearian and modern drama is performed at the theatre during the summer. On a headland south of Trecn and east of Porthcurno is a 'logan' rock, estimated to weigh about 65 tons, which 'logs', or rocks, at the slightest touch. In 1824 a Lieutenant Goldsmith and a part) of sailors pushed it over the cliff; the incident caused such an outcry that Goldsmith had to restore the rock to its original position at his own expense.
