| Annual Programme of Events 2011/2012 Welcome to our new format of providing members with a programme of events that will run concurrently with the subscription year, from 5th April 2011 until the AGM on 6th March 2012. The programme is available as hard copy for every paid up member and also on the art society’s website. The monthly painting meetings have now been adopted as a permanent feature of the society’s activities and will continue throughout the year including the summer. The meetings are held on the third Wednesday of the month at the Trinity Church Hall from 2.00pm until 4.30pm. The cost of each session remains at £2.50. Viv Dobson has kindly co-ordinated our outside painting days, these will take place once a month throughout the summer and include two new, exciting venues that we hope will be well supported. The meetings are all arranged for a Tuesday and start at 10.00 am finishing at 4.00 pm. (Please note for the Hampton Court visit the start is 10.30am.) There is a named convenor for each event that will act as the main contact point for any queries about the day including weather, directions and car sharing. Please contact the convenor if you intend to arrive later in the day. The committee has decided to trial an extension of the Spring Exhibition to run for an extra day so please note this will now finish on a Tuesday evening rather than the Monday. Summer Programme of Events Tuesday May 10th Hampton Court Convenor Margaret Watson: 01531 635269 The garden has been renovated recently and is full of features such as a Victorian flower garden, an ornamental walled kitchen garden, waterfall, sunken garden, canals, river, pavilion, tower and ancient woodland walks. The only real restriction for artists is to keep paths clear for other garden visitors. The Orangery cafe will be open for coffee, teas homemade cakes and light lunches. ( There may be a small charge for entry approx £5.50. ) Directions: The Castle (HR6 OPN) is situated on the A417 in Hope Under Dinmore area South of Leominster. From the Hereford road turn right at the Trumpet lights and continue on the A417 for approximately 20 minutes. Turn left through the main entrance gate and follow the track to the right into the car park. 14th – 16th May Exhibition by Beckwith Fine Art at Wilton Castle Beckford Fine Art will be hosting a Fine Art Exhibition from 14 to 16 May 2011 in the walled garden at Wilton Castle. This exhibition and the gardens will be open to the general public with an entrance fee of £ 4 per adult payable on the door. The event will showcase the work of 25 professional artists and will be an opportunity to meet and buy work directly from them. This event will be previewed on the Friday night with a drinks reception in aid of the Herefordshire Red Cross during which there will be an informative talk by Angus Haldane (a former senior expert with both Sotheby’s and Christie’s) on The Art Market, tickets for the event are £8.00 per person. Friday 27th May to Tuesday 31st May: LAS Spring Exhibition Burgage Hall, Ledbury Last year’s exhibition was a great success and it is hoped that with member’s support this can be emulated in 2011.The extra day will mean that the hard work put into mounting the exhibition will be available for longer to attract a wider audience. The exhibition is open to all paid up members who we hope will support the show by helping with entries, staging, stewarding and catering for the Preview Evening. Page 2 Tuesday 7th June Showborough House and Sculpture Garden Convenor: Diana Veasey 01531 631099 By kind permission of Andrew and Glynis Roache (20 minutes drive from Ledbury) A new venue for the society (See www.showborough.com). Showborough is a 1.5 acre natural garden, extensively renovated around an old red brick house to give a variety of vistas. In Spring months a diffuse collection of sculpture by local artists is displayed, set off by the planting. Exclusive opening for LAS, so donations to Showborough’s current charity are welcomed. Toilet and some shelter on site. Light refreshments available all day (£1.00 tea/coffee etc). There is a village pub for lunch (1 mile). Directions: From Ledbury take Worcester Road. After 1 mile Turn R (A438 toTewkesbury). Follow A438 until you cross Mythe Bridge over River Severn. Immediately turn L (A38, Worcester). After 2 miles, in Shuthonger (opposite Hilton hotel), turn right to Twyning. At Twyning War Memorial take the road signposted to Hillend, Strensham and Pershore. After ½ mile turn right (signed Showborough and Downfield). At the bottom of the hill turn left, (Showborough). Showborough House is the first property on the right. Park on the common in front of the property. (There are usually local signs to Showborough Sculpture exhibition too.) Easier to find than it sounds! Tuesday 5th July Hope End House Convenor Tony Bateman 01531632539 By kind permission of Sharon Maiden Once again Tony Bateman is going to lead a group at this lovely venue with its wonderful Victorian architecture, stunning gardens and views. There will be a collection for charity usually £3.00 but this does include tea and cakes!! From Ledbury take the B4214 Bromyard Road, turn right signed Wellington Heath and after approx 1½ miles turn right at the island oak tree continue on this road for approx 1 mile towards Petty France and Hope End House is clearly marked on the left. It is essential to take the left hand fork part way up the drive to Hope End House and not to Hope End. Tuesday 2nd August Newent Town Convenor: Viv Dobson 01531 890296 You will find lots to inspire you in this picturesque market town, as there is a wealth of interesting architecture. This includes a striking 17th century market house in the centre of the town, and St Mary’s Church dating back to the 13th century. The delightful Shambles off Church Street offers shade and also a café for refreshments. This would be an ideal spot from which to sketch or paint; as would be the beautiful lake, which is just two minutes from the car park. Should you wish to bring a picnic lunch this tranquil setting would be perfect. Close to the lake at the entrance to the car park is the Good News Centre, which serves snacks. There are also pubs and cafes in the town. Directions: From Ledbury take the B4126 to Dymock. At the Beauchamp Arms turn left. At the next set of traffic lights proceed straight across, and down Newent High Street. At the bottom of the hill turn left into the main car park. There is no parking charge. Tuesday 6th September Wilton Castle & Gardens Ross on Wye Convenor Tony Bateman 01531 632539 By kind permission of Alan & Sue Parsloe First visited last year, Wilton Castle has all the ingredients for a great painting day with its wonderfully restored 12th century castle, 16th century manor house all surrounded by beautiful gardens nestling beside the river Wye. The garden will be exclusively opened for the society with a small charge of £4.00 for charity. Tea & coffee is included. Directions from Ledbury take the A449 to Ross. At the first roundabout ( The traveller’s Rest) continue straight over; at the next roundabout (Labels) continue straight over, at the next round about (BP garage) turn left and the immediate left to the castle. Autumn / Winter Programme 2011 / 2012 This year’s programme of demonstrations has been carefully selected to ensure that as large a spectrum of art techniques and mediums as possible has been covered. The monthly demonstrations will be held, as usual , at the Trinity Church Hall. The meetings will commence at 9.45 am with society notices followed by the demonstration at 10.00am. The coffee break will be around 11.00am and the meeting will end at 12.00 pm approx. Tuesday 4th October Demonstration Jackie Cox Pastel Landscapes Jackie is a local artist with a studio in Longhope and works in many medias including pastel, watercolour. Her work covers both landscape, nature and animal portraits, she also makes silver and bead jewellery that she exhibits and sells from her studio. Page 3 Tuesday 1st November Demonstration Terry Harrison Acrylic Landscape We are very lucky to have finally secured a demonstration from this well-known and extremely popular artist. Terry demonstrates for the SAA on their Sky channel, is featured in the SAA magazine and is a regular at the Arts Live exhibition at the NEC. He is amusing, down to earth and full of invaluable advice and techniques. Not to be missed. Saturday 19th November Workshop Alison Vickery acrylic inks and mixed media still life This is a follow on from Alison’s very successful workshop from last year. In this session she will extend the range of materials and techniques available for creating still life paintings moving into collage and mixed mediums. The cost of the workshop is £18.00. The hall will be available from 9.30 to set up, tea and coffee will be available during the day. Tuesday 6th December Demonstration Gerald Savine Gouache Harbour Scene Gerald has a studio by the river at Upton on Severn. He works in many mediums and specialises in railway art. He teaches workshops and classes in Upton and has demonstrated for the SAA. Tuesday 3rd January 2012 Demonstration Sue Townsend Oil Landscape and tonal values Sue is making a welcome return to LAS having previously demonstrated for us creating a memorable piece of work based on lavender fields in Provence. She is returning to demonstrate again in oils but with an emphasis on that all-important technique of tonal values. Tuesday 7th February Demonstration Fiona Peart Vibrant Watercolour Flowers Fiona is a fine artist and well known to Leisure Painter readers for her informative articles that are a regular feature of the magazine. Fiona also demonstrates her watercolour techniques on Sky TV and in the SAA magazine. She demonstrates and teaches throughout the country and has produced many books and DVD’s on the subject of watercolour painting. Not to be missed. Saturday 11th February Workshop Jackie Cox Using Coloured Pencils This all day workshop will give an opportunity not only to practise your drawing skills but also to experiment with a wide range of different sorts of pencils provided by Jackie. Exact details and a materials list will be available nearer the time. The cost of the workshop is £13.00.
