South Yorkshire includes the ex-mining areas of Barnsley and Doncaster and the steel cities of Rotherham and Sheffield. These are not here is the one would naturally associate with music, but they had their own unique music in the past, the music of the steel mill. I used to work in the steel industry, in the days when British Steel still existed. To most people steel mills are thought of as dirty smelly places, but anyone who's knows them they are the most exciting and wonderful places on the planet. There is little more exciting than a 30 tonne white hot steel ingot being squeezed into a slab by an enormous rolling mill, or seeing a steel rod travelling at 70 miles an hour through the multiple rollers of a rod mill, often snaking back and forth within the building. And the noise is overwhelming, full of excitement and drama, telling the achievements of those people who built the mills, the strength and dedication of the people who worked there. It is real music I think, not contrived by the human mind and the composer, but music nevertheless as it creates overwhelming emotions and as an accompaniment to the physical spectacle of the rolling mill. And what is music after all, it is sounds that engender emotions, be they happy, sad, excitement or fear. If one thinks of the soundtrack music of some of the best suspense movies, it is not to dissimilar to the sum the sound one would hear in the steel rolling mill. So to me, Sheffield was, and is still to a lesser extent, in my mind musical centre, even before anyone picks up an instrument to play in a jazz band or string quartet. Thinking about it, I would have loved to have played a string quartet in the middle of a steel mill, but I guess I'm not likely to have that opportunity now. A pity.

Doncaster is a busy industrial town, with little left to recall its Roman and medieval history. There is some Georgian architecture, especially the Mansion House in the High Street and some houses in Hallgate and South Parade. The town has some fine 19th-century churches, among them the lofty parish church of St George facing the Don. The famous racecourse is on the east side of the town. The original 18th-century grandstand has Venetian windows, Tuscan columns and an Italianate tower.

Goole is one of Britain's furthest inland seaports, situated 42 miles from the North Sea, where the Don meets the Ouse. Grimsby is the largest town on the coast, and one of the world's great fishing ports. Until the recent Icelandic cod war, there was a 24-hour movement of heavy lorries out of the town laden with frozen fish for the Midlands and the South; but that dispute has seriously diminished the activity of the port, and many of its trawlers are now laid up.

Few cities in England have a finer setting than Sheffield, built in an amphitheatre of south Pennine slopes. The most interesting building is the parish church, made a cathedral in 1913. Stained glass adds mellow light to an interior in which later additions have been successfully grafted on to the 15th-century church.

The university used to have a continuous lift in one of the buildings, which was in effect a belt over a top and bottom pulleys, with lift cubicles attached. You jumped into and out of the cubicles as they passed your floor. Very exciting, but a bit of a health and safety question mark, and I understand it no longer exists. But I did ride excitedly on it in the days before I became a full time musician.

For a city of its size, Sheffield has few early buildings of any note. Those of the Cutlers' Hall in Church Street with its Grecian facade, and there are some Georgian houses north of the cathedral, notably those in Paradise Square.

Sheffield's earliest industrial history is recalled at the Abbcydale Industrial Hamlet, 3^ miles south-west. It comprises a restored 200-year-old scythe factory with all its equipment, including a furnace for producing steel in crucibles, and water-powered tilt-hammers and grindstones. Another relic of the past is the Shepherd Wheel at Endcliffe Park, west of Sheffield, a late 18^th century cutlery grinding wheel.

Rotherham is a busy industrial town at the confluence of the Rother and the Don. The bridge spanning the Don has a 15th-century chapel, one of only four such bridge chapels remaining in England.
