Dorset is a land of chalk hills, the bare uplands of Salisbury Plain are the hub of southern England's chalk-lands. The Marlborough Downs spread north, and the hills of Dorset stretch south-west. The North and South Downs extend eastwards across Hampshire.

Musically, the coast is dominated by the seaside towns of Weymouth, Poole and Bournemouth. Where there is a traditional seaside holiday town, there are theatres and musicals, particularly in past history. Variety shows encompass everything from jazz to pop, and occasionally light classics. There is the Regent Centre, Bournemouth Pier Theatre, the Pavilion Theatre, Bournemouth International Centre, Bournemouth Little Theatre club, the O2 Academy in Bournemouth, the Tivoli Theatre in Wimborne and so on and so forth. So plenty of venues for live music of all kinds.

Moving inland you in a world of agricultural towns and villages whether barn dance and ceilidh tradition of folk music is strong.

Bournemouth is a town devoted to the holidaymaker. with superb sands, a mild climate and every kind of entertainment and open air sport. Parks and gardens cover 2001 acres, or one-sixth of Bournemouth' total town area. There are two pier; and three lifts from street level to th beaches. The Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra,   which   has   a world wide reputation, plays in the Winter Garden Less than 200 years ago, the valley which Bournemouth is situated was wilderness  of unused  common  land between the already nourishing boroughs of Christchurch and Poole.

wed Classical/Flamenco Guitarist - Chris ref: 6020

Poole is Dorset's largest town has a harbour with a miraculously untouched i8th-century atmosphere. Much of the tremendous natural harbour, about 95 miles round, seems little changed since the days of pirates—one almost expects to meet stocking-capped smugglers at the next corner. There are many i8th-ccntury and early 19th-century houses, including delightful old inns like The Angel, and The Old Customs House, rebuilt in 1813 after a previous building had been burnt down.

A long line of harbour offices and ships' chandlers appears little changed since the days of prosperous timber trading with Newfoundland in the i8th and 19th centuries. Poole Pottery on the quayside is open to the public. There are two golf courses and from Compton Acres gardens there is a superb view over the harbour.

The town of Swanage was once a Saxon port, and is referred to in the Domesday Book as 'Swanic'; and a granite column on the front commemorates King Alfred's naval victory over the Danish fleet in the bay in AD 877. Today it is a busy holiday resort, with a fine beach for bathing. The facade of the town hall was designed by Wren in 1670.

NYE The AJ Jazz Band ref: 3921.2

Lulworth is a tourist spot of such renown that its real grandeur is best appreciated out of season. West Lulworth includes Lulworth Cove, where the chalk cliffs suddenly end and two arms of Portland and Purbeck stone almost encircle a lake-like body of water.

A not-too-arduous climb and walk westwards leads to the sheltered Man o' War Bay and to a huge limestone arch called Durdle Door, which juts out to sea. Walk along the beach on a wild, gusty day for a closer view of giant waves crashing through the arch.

East Lulworth, 23 miles east of West Lulworth, is an attractive village dominated by the estates of the Weld family. Their castle, set in 600 acres of rich woodland, was gutted by fire in 10.29. The adjoining Rotunda, built in 1786, was the first Roman Catholic church built by royal permission after the Reformation; George III consented on condition that it did not look like a church.

The road eastwards to Steeple along the ridge of the Purbeck Hills gives superb views towards the coast across the beautiful Tyneham Valley. But this road is on Defence Ministry land, so watch for the notices indicating whether the area is open or closed.

Party celebrating wedding The TB Ceilidh/Barn Dance Band ref: 6131

The village of Corfe Castle, with its tumbling and undulating stone roofs that cap grey-stone houses, has a quaint character of its own, but is dominated by the stark, spectacular fortress above it. Corfe Castle is a monument to centuries of cruelty, dating from the murder, in AD 978, of 18-year-old King Edward (later called 'The Martyr') by his stepmother Queen Aelfthryth. Cromwell besieged the castle in 1646, after which it was largely demolished and its stone used in local building.

Bere Regis with its Saxon parish church was largely rebuilt by Cardinal Morton, Henry VII's Chancellor, and is noted for the painted timber roof of the nave. Its arches, supported by figures of the 12 apostles in 15th-century dress, bear the arms of the Cardinal's various offices. The church has become a place of pilgrimage for admirers of Hardy's novel Tess of the D' Urbervilles. Its heroine, Tess, was buried there, and a stained glass window bears the lion rampant crest of the old Dorset family of Turberville on whom Hardy based his novel. On Woodbury Hill, just east of the village, stand the remains of an Iron Age fortification from which there are views across heath and river valleys stretching eastwards towards Poole.

wife’ 60th birthday party Lute - Chris ref: 2081

There is a splendid approach from Blandford to the little market town of Wimborne Minster, down a long avenue of beeches, which skirts the triple-banked Iron Age defensive earthworks of Badbury Rings, centred in the heathlands of east Dorset, with five main roads radiating from it. Wimborne makes an ideal centre for touring the area. Its prosperity was formerly based on wool, but now comes from market gardening.

The twin-towered Church of St Cuthberga, one of the great churches of Dorset, embraces almost every style of architecture from Norman to late Gothic. On the west tower of the church is the Ojiarter Jack clock, which has the figure of a brilliantly clad grenadier to strike the quarter hours with a hammer. The Priest's House Museum has a collection of antiques and some of the best horse brasses in the country.

In Christchurch, behind Christchurch Quay stands the splendid priory church, its structure a blend of styles from Saxon times to the Renaissance. Its choir stalls are older than those in Westminster Abbey, and there is a monument to the poet Shelley. The town has the remains of a Norman house and castle, and the Red House Museum contains exhibits drawn from the geology and wildlife of the area. A 2-mile walk towards Bournemouth leads to Hengistbury Head, an observation point for bird migrations.

Dorchester is a bustling county town and shopping centre. The lines of its main roads were laid down by the Romans, and there is an excavated Roman house in Colliton Park, near the new county hall. Dorset County Museum has a good collection of Roman and pre-Roman finds, including the remains of an early warrior who, some experts believe, was dismembered after his death in battle at Maiden Castle. The museum also has a collection of Thomas Hardy manuscripts and a reconstruction of the novelist's study at Max Gate, his former home.

Maumbury Rings, south of the town, is the site of a Stone Age circle adapted by the Romans as an amphitheatre capable of seating 10,000 people. The site was used as late as 1767 for Hanging Fairs, or public executions.

Stock Gaylard Stock Gaylard, Sturminster Newton, Dorset , DT10 2BG, Dorset

Live music booked for Wedding The GB Scottish Ceilidh Dance Band ref: 4990

Sturminster Newton is the market centre for the Stour farmlands. A graceful six-arched 15th-century bridge over the river carries the dire warning of 'Transportation for life' for those who damage it. The 17th-century town mill is still working, churning its waters into white-flecked foam. The wooden-porticoed Mill House on the road to Blandford Forum faces a thatched house of character. A little further on is Newton House; its Georgian facade, with a curious medallion frieze over the front door, hides its much greater age.

William Barnes, who wrote 'Linden Lea' and is noted for his use of the pure dialect of his county, was born at nearby Pentridge Farm. Thomas Hardy wrote The Return of the Native in a greystone mansion, Riverside, on the outskirts of the town.

Sturminster Newton is made colourful by many bow-windowed buildings of brick, stone and cob. There are also good thatched, timber-traced houses leading up to the pretty market square where, on Monday mornings, crowds of farmers and dairymen overflow into the station yard and surrounding streets. The thatched White Hart Inn is 18th century, and the Perpendicular church has been enriched by modern artists.

The handsome Georgian town of Blandford Forum was practically burnt to the ground in 1731. Its new builders gave it the cool, classical proportions of early to mid 18th century planning. Nearly all the buildings in Market Place, East Street and Salisbury Street, including the period parish church, are well designed and built in pleasing red or rust brick and stone. The Corn Exchange is outstanding, as is the zoo-year-old pump under a graceful Doric porch.

The nearby village of Bryanston, with its picturesque thatched cottages and well-known public school, lies beside a lovely bend of the Stour.

Dorchester is a beautiful town on the River Thame (pronounced Tame) near its junction with the Thames. The town's history goes back to before the Bronze Age, and it was an important Roman settlement. The old High Street, although now on the main road from Henley to Oxford, is winding and lovely, lined with half-timbered or brick houses.

The late Norman abbey, 200 ft long and containing 13th-ccntury glass, is one of the most splendid buildings in the Thames Valley. The prevailing style of the building is Decorated, and among its treasures are a 12th-century lead font, and a window and stonework representing the Tree of Jesse. Medieval miracle plays arc sometimes acted here.

A path near the abbey leads through a Victorian lych-gate towards the river. Across the river are the Sinodun Hills, a fine viewpoint, crowned by a hill fort dating back to c. I50OBC.

Weymouth is an ancient port and modern terminal for Channel Island steamers, as well as being a popular resort with sweeping, sandy beaches and safe bathing. Pleasant groups of Georgian and early Victorian houses, some with fine ironwork balconies, some bow-windowed, stretch in a line from the harbour to the end of the promenade. In Trinity Street, two Tudor cottages are now a museum, housing typical furnishings of an Elizabethan sea-dog's house. There are many unspoilt villages within easy reach, and a 4-mile walk eastwards to Osming-ton Mills can be rewarded by freshly cooked lobsters in any one of a number of little inns overlooking the sea.

Thomas Hardy called this narrow, rugged peninsula of Portland 'the Gibraltar of Wessex'. All the level surfaces of the 2 mile wide mass of almost treeless rock are scarred with quarries; the light-brown, rough-textured Portland stone has been enhancing important buildings ever since Sir Christopher Wren used it to build St Paul's Cathedral.

Because of Portland's vulnerable position, two castles were built to fortify it. The earliest, the Bow and Arrow Castle built by the Normans above Church Ope Cove, is now in ruins, but Portland Castle, built in 1520 by Henry VIII, has been well preserved and still stands on the northern shore.

Modern Portland is a major naval base, using a massive harbour and breakwater which were completed in 1872 after taking 23 years to build. From Church Ope Cove, there are some fine cliff walks with impressive views; Portland's highest point (496 ft) gives good views westwards along the Chesil Beach and eastwards to the Purbeck Hills. The old lighthouse on Portland Bill is now used as a bird watching station. There is good bathing for careful swimmers from Church Ope Cove.

Lyme Regis is a medieval port which became a seaside resort in the i8th century. It earned its royal title when Edward I used its harbour—sheltered by the massive breakwater known as the Cobb—during his wars against the French. The Duke of Monmouth landed here in 1685 to lead his ill-fated rebellion against James II. Smugglers used the town, until the fashion for sea-bathing restored it to respectability.

The resort was a favourite of the novelist Jane Austen, who set part of the action of Persuasion in Lyme Regis. There are fine views along the bay, dominated by Golden Cap, at 617 ft the highest cliff on England's south coast.

West Axnoller FarmNear Beaminster Dorset, DT8 3SH, Dorset

Registry wedding for Sadie & Phil Morgan Harpist  - Ruth ref: 2418

Beaminster is a small town set among steep farmland hills, much loved by Dorset's early T 9th-century poet William Barnes, who wrote in the dialect of the county, and by the novelist Thomas Hardy, who made the town the 'Emminster' of his Tess of the D'Urbervilks. Its pinnacled market cross and prosperous 18th-century houses, built in the golden Ham Hill stone of the region, give the square an illusion of size; and the sparkling little River Brit, running along the side of the main street, adds charm.

Vivid green wooded hills descend close to the town on both sides, and there are rewarding walks in almost any direction. An enjoyable drive leads over Hackthorn Hill up the 8oo-ft rise of Toller Down, where there are secluded picnic spots with grand views.

The imposing abbey of golden stone, at Sherborne, has one of the most graceful fan-vaulted roofs in England. Sherborne School, just beyond the restored south porch of the abbey, incorporates a good deal of the original monastic buildings. The school figured as the setting for the film musical Goodbye, Mr Chips. The 13th-century almshouse near by has a fine triptych, which is either German or Flemish; the brilliance of its colouring is due to the use of tempera—paint mixed with egg yolk—on oak.

The town abounds in old inns and 16th and 17th-century houses, built in the same golden stone as the abbey, and set in curving little streets. Sherborne Old Castle, where Sir Walter Raleigh lived for 15 years, is now a ruin. Sherborne New Castle is rich in art treasures.

The town of Shaftesbury is built on the edge of a yoo-ft plateau, giving fine views over the Blackmoor Vale. It figures under its old name, 'Shaston', in Hardy's novels. The town first grew up around a nunnery endowed in AD 880 by King Alfred. In the iSth-century Grosvenor Hotel, there is a famous Victorian sideboard, carved in 1862-7 by Gerrard Robinson from a single block of oak and depicting events in the 'Ballad of Chevy Chase'.

The town has some excellent grey-green, 18th-century stone houses, and the steep, cobbled Gold Hill is buttressed on one side and terraced like an Italian hill town on the other.
