Shropshire is large predominantly rural county, with huge areas of beautiful countryside dotted with farms and villages. Shrewsbury, at its centre, is a town of of greater antiquity and culture, so there is plenty of music to be had there. Other part of the county are really quite close to Birmingham with its great concert hall. Most are living Shropshire at one time, and used to enjoy orienteering on the Wrekin and on Brown's Clee and Titterstone Clee. It is a county of contrasts, with lots of villagers in village halls where barn dance and ceilidhs are popular, and upmarket towns like Shrewsbury and Bridgnorth (on a sunny day rather like one of those beautiful French towns perched on a rock in the Dordogne), where one would not be surprised to hear string quartet playing, or jazz band doing its thing.

Shrewsbury is the county town of Shropshire, beautifully situated within a loop of the Severn. Everywhere are superb black-and-white buildings in plaster and weathered timber, including Abbot's House (1450); the tall gabled Ireland's Mansion (1575); and the early 16th-century Rowley's House, which has a museum of Roman remains

St Mary's Church dates back to the I2th century and has a loft stone spire, fine medieval carving and stained-glass windows. The circular St Chad's, designed in 1792 by George Steuart, stands in a prominent position overlooking the Severn. It is one ot the country's few round churches and has a strangely shaped tower which looks like a minaret topped by a dome.

The town's library is now housed in the original early 17th-century buildings of Shrewsbury's public school. The naturalist Charles Darwin, who was born in Shrewsbury in 1809, attended the school, and a statue of him stands in front of the library.

The Lion is an ancient coaching inn with a splendid ballroom. Among its famous igth-century visitors were the singer Jenny Lind, the violinist Paganini, and Charles Dickens. The Battle of Shrewsbury (1403) was fought at Battlefield, 3 miles north of the town.

There are many half-timbered houses, and churches rich with fine wood-carvings, and the countryside around them has an abundance of wildlife: foxes, otters, polecats, badgers, pine martens, buzzards and rare red kites. North Powys is as rich in historical associations as any other part of Wales. The great Owen Glendower, fighter for Welsh independence, made Machynlleth his capital and called his first parliament there in 1404, when he was proclaimed king. From Newtown came Robert Owen, a fighter of a different kind—campaigner for the reform of working conditions in factories in the early igth century. He was born in the town in 1771 and buried in the churchyard in 1858. Surviving associations with Owen include a 19th-century weaving factory and the Robert Owen Memorial Museum.

Church Stretton consists of a cluster of red-roofed houses makes up this small resort and market town; it was granted a Market Charter by King John in 1214. The parish church is partly 12th-century Norman and partly 13th century, with a 14th-century nave roof. Over the bricked-up Norman north door, known in the past as the Corpse

Door because the dead were taken through it, is a well-worn Saxon fertility figure. Little Stretton, 1 mile south, has a charming timber-framed manor house. Its 20th-century church is unusual in having a thatched roof.

Spectacular scenery rises west and east of Church Stretton and Little Stretton. Cardingmill Valley, which provides a splendid walk to the heights of The Long Mynd, begins on the northern outskirts of Church Stretton.

Another fine walk leads to the oval summit of Caer Caradoc, 2 miles northeast. Halfway down the heather-clad western slope of this I506-ft hill is a cave where the British chieftain Caractacus made his last, unsuccessful stand against the Romans in AD 50.

Craven Arms is a quiet little market town, named after its modernised Georgian inn. The town comes to life during its sheep auctions, held from late August until late October. Stokesay Castle, three-quarters of a mile south, is a perfectly preserved 13th-century fortified stone manor, which consists of two sturdy stone towers joined by a great gabled banqueting hall with tall Gothic windows. The black-and-white Elizabethan gatehouse has a stone roof and overhanging upper storey. The nearby church, separated from the manor by a moat, has a Norman doorway, rebuilt in the tyth century.

The approach to Ludlow across the attractive Ludford Bridge and the steep slope of Broad Street gives an immediate impression of the town's mellow beauty. Roger Montgomery, Earl of Shrewsbury, built the massive red-sandstone keep and castle in 1085. Norman, Plantagenet and Lancastrian kings and princes developed, destroyed and rebuilt the castle. Here the two sons of Edward IV were sent for 'safe keeping' until they were taken to their deaths in the Tower of London. Henry VIII's elder brother Arthur came to the castle with his wife, Catherine of Aragon. His death in Ludlow a few months later changed the course of English history. Henry became heir apparent and later married Catherine. The terraced walk round the castle was laid out by Arthur for Catherine. John Milton saw the first production of his masque 'Comus' in the castle hall in 1634.

Shifnal is a market town, which has fine half-timbered and Georgian houses, and was described by Dickens in The Old Curiosity Shop. St Andrew's Church, originally Norman was one of the few-buildings to escape a great fire in 1591 which destroyed most of the town. The church, built of local sandstone, has i6th and 17th-century monuments, and two chancels, one original and the other built in the I4th century.

Shifnal Manor, a mile south, is a moated farmhouse by a stream. At Weston-under-Lizard, 5 miles northeast, is the entrance to Weston Park, a splendid post-Restoration mansion owned by the Earls of Bradford but open to the public. The great house, built in 1674, has a superb collection of furnishings and paintings, and a deer park laid out by Capability Brown.

Market Drayton is the birthplace in 1725 of Robert Clive— Clive of India—and today an attractive market town; its Wednesday market has been held for 700 years. There are many good half-timbered houses dating from the mid-i7th century. In the 14th-century parish church there are several Norman features, particularly a carved capital depicting William Rufus and his court. From the sturdy tower—said to have been climbed by the youthful Clive—there are fine views across the valley of the River Tern. The 16th-century grammar school where Clive was educated stands near the church, and has a desk carved with his initials.
