The huge industrial and commercial area that is Manchester is very much more musical than many people would think. It has its own orchestra, the Halle, which is founded back in 1858 by Sir Charles Halle. Although I've never lived in Manchester, and have never spent a lot of time there, it has had a strong musical influence on me. My very first violin teacher, Mr Hratch Gasparian, an amazing Armenian violinist, had once been a member of the Halle Orchestra. That was in my junior school days. More recently I've had the pleasure of playing with a number of graduates of the Royal Northern College of Music. There's something different about this college, in that they seem to train their musicians to put a lot of emotion into their playing and give it plenty of welly. It's a style that I particularly like. Needless to say, there are lots of excellent string quartets in the area as well as musicians of other genres. Also being a big city, there are some good jazz venues, anti-folk bands and surrounding areas.

Bolton was the birthplace of Samuel Crompton (1753-1827), the inventor of the 'spinning mule' which was to revolutionise the textile industry. The civic centre in Victoria Square has an art gallery, museum and aquarium. The Old Man and Scythe, a 13th-century inn in Church Gate, has associations with the Civil War. Lord Derby, who was executed by Cromwell in retaliation for a Royalist massacre in the town, spent his last hours there before his death. A new theatre, the Octagon, opened in 1967.

Turton Bottoms is a small village in spectacular walking country. Turton Tower is an impressive 12th-century house, to which an upper storey and half-timbered wings were added in the i6th century. The Ashworth Museum is housed in the upper storey of a large, well-preserved 15th-century tower. Humphrey Chetham, founder of a library and hospital in Manchester which now form the Blue Coat School, lived in Turton. The old inn in the High Street bears the Chetham arms.

The origins of the key industrial and commercial city of Manchester are Roman: it was the site of Mancunium, a camp built by Agricola's legions on the banks of the River Irwell in AD 79, on their way from Chester to York.

Manchester's weaving tradition dates back to Flemish weavers in the i4th century, but it was little more than a large market town until the Industrial Revolution made it the main trading centre for Lancashire cotton. The proximity of coal for the steam-powered mills and the suitability of the climate for textile work helped the expansion. Gradually the industry shifted westward towards the ports, threatening to strand Manchester; but the completion of the Manchester Ship Canal in 1894 converted the city into an inland port and opened the way for the growth of other industries. Today Manchester is one of Britain's largest ports.

Macclesfield is an old silk-manufacturing town full of character, from its steep streets to its i8th and 19th-century mills. Its oldest church, St Michael's, was largely rebuilt, but it still retains the battlemented look of its medieval origins and is reached, on one side, by 108 steps. Black-and-white timbered houses line hilly streets which look east over the green Bollin Valley towards the Peak District.

Gawsworth Hall, 3 miles south, is an attractive half-timbered manor house. It was the home of Mary Fitton, Maid of Honour to Elizabeth I and the supposed 'Dark Lady' of Shakespeare's sonnets. The estate includes an orangery, a tilting ground and a large walled park.

Macclesfield Forest, 4 miles east, is a small village on the edge of the vast wild moorland of the same name. The crags and narrow valleys of these moors were once the haunt of highwaymen and brigands. The Cat and Fiddle Inn is 3 miles east in an isolated moorland setting, at 1690 ft.

Stamford is an ancient town, built of mellowed local stone. The Romans had a camp here, the Saxons developed it further and the Danes made it the capital of the Fens. Later still the Normans built a castle, the traces of which can be seen today, on the site of the Danish stronghold. By the I2th century, Stamford was an important wool centre, and Stamford cloth was renowned throughout Europe. The wealth that came from wool paid for many of the 16th-century buildings in the town, which is notable for its pleasing mixture of different buildings—Georgian mansions, Queen Anne homes and Tudor houses.

In the eastern part of Stamford is the ruined chapel of St Leonard's Priory, dating mostly from the I2th century. In the wall of the old grammar school is Brasenose Gate; this was part of Brasenose Hall, which was occupied by rebellious Oxford University students who established halls of learning at Northampton and Stamford in the 13th century. By 1336 they had settled their differences with the university authorities and returned to Oxford. The 'brazen-nosed' bull from the Hall now decorates Brasenose College, Oxford.

The 13th-century St Mary's Church has an exceptionally fine 14th-century spire with four stone evangelists. All Saints' Church has a 13th-century nave and chancel and a separate tower and spire were added .

Cheadle is an old market town in the North Staffordshire hills, and a gateway to the richly wooded Churnet Valley. The 200-ft steeple of the Roman Catholic church, designed in 1846 by A. W. Pugin, one of the architects of the Houses of Parliament, is a landmark for miles around. There are picturesque half-timbered Elizabethan houses, and an ancient market cross.

Hawksmoor Nature Reserve, 2 miles north-east, was founded by the Staffordshire naturalist J. R. B. Masefield, a cousin of the poet John Masefield, and is now owned by the National Trust. Nature trails run through its 250 acres of moors, marshes and woodland, and provide a close view of birdlife.
