Woodstock was until recently this was one of the most beautiful towns in the country, but much of its 18th-century elegance has been destroyed by modern building. However, Woodstock will continue to draw visitors because of Blenheim Palace, Sir John Vanbrugh's grandiose masterpiece built for John Churchill, the ist Duke of Marlborough. Among the famous craftsmen who worked on the palace were Sir James Thornhill, who painted the ceiling in the great hall, Laguerre, Gibbons, and Rysbrack, the designer of the duke's monument in the chapel. The house was begun as a gift from a grateful nation to the duke after his victory over the French and Bavarians at Blenheim in 1704; but the Marl-boroughs themselves had to pay £50,000 for its completion. One of its main attractions today is the room where Sir Winston Churchill, grandson of the 7th Duke of Marlborough, was born on November 30, 1874.

The park-like landscapes of the immense Blenheim Park were created by Capability Brown, who dammed the River Glyme to make Blenheim's fine lake. Bladon stands on the edge of the park, and in Bladon churchyard Sir Winston and his parents Lord and Lady-Randolph Churchill are buried.

West Somerton is a quiet village at the eastern end of Martham Broad, with a weedy reach good for angling. Drainage of the marshy surroundings, carried out through a maze of streams and dikes reaching the sea near Yarmouth, was once powered by windmill-pumps, most of them now shorn of their sails. In the 18th century, smugglers are said to have landed cargoes in Somerton Gap, working to instructions provided by the windmill sails, which were set at agreed angles to issue warnings of Revenue men and transmit messages.

right on the river by the ancient three arched bridge, this was originally built in the 18th century as a private house. It soon turned in to an inn, which must have been a sensible thing to do as is guaranteed a constant flow of travellers crossing the Thames at Newbridge. The bridge itself is somewhat earlier, being 13th century, and was told crossing until the 1930s. Being by the river, it always has the threat of flooding, the owners apparently have put in some cunning flood defences of their own, so that if you've hired a ceilidh band for your wedding, you can be sure that it can be danced without paddling, no matter what the weather.

this is one of the many superb gardens that exist in the Cotswolds, and was the home of the School of horticulture for ladies from 1932 to 1971. I always think, as a musician, it is a privilege to play music in beautiful gardens like these, indeed musicians who are booked for weddings, parties and corporate events are very fortunate in that they can play in beautiful gardens, elegant houses, and the sort of places that those musicians who only give formal concerts, never experience. Formal concerts in concert halls are all very well, and musically perfect, but I find it much more interesting to play music in some elegant stately home, surrounded by beautiful furnishings, and playing for people who are socialising and enjoying themselves in a relaxed atmosphere. And of course, if you have been hired to play for an event in gardens that are open to the public as well, then not just those people who have booked you can enjoy the music, but so can other visitors to the gardens. I've no idea whether on this occasion the gardens were close to the public, or whether other visitors were enjoying the gardens, but I've certainly played myself in situations where more than just those people who have hired us can enjoy the music.

they advertise this as the largest venue for conferences and events in Oxford, though underneath the statement they do say one of the largest, but whatever, it's a large modern building. It is used for corporate events, and obviously being in university city of Oxford, with so much going on in science and literature, and many start-up companies, conference centres well used. For this event, the quartet were booked to play civilised music to set the correct atmosphere for the reception.

A fragment of the once great royal hunting forest of Wychwood overlooks the valley of the River Evenlode, and gives its name to picturesque villages like Shipton-under-Wychwood, Milton-under-Wychwood and Ascott-under-Wychwood. In medieval times the forest was as large and important as the New Forest. Henry 1 used to keep a menagerie there, and in Tudor times hunting parties used to carouse in Burford. The surviving woodland, the highest peak of which reaches 509 ft, is beautiful countryside.

Thame is a market town that was old at the time of the Domesday Book. Its mile-long main street is so wide that a whole group of buildings, including the town hall, have been set down in the middle of the road. Every year this road is filled »ith stalls at the big autumn fair. The houses and cottages are like a Christmas-card picture—particularly the small gingerbread house near the top of the main street. Four of the inns date from the ijth century. One of them, The Bird Cage, is a gabled and timber-framed building, which is believed to have once been the local lock-up. Another inn, The Spread Eagle, was made famous by John Fothergill, a writer on country inns between the two World Wars, in An Innkeeper's Diary. There are fine brasses in the 13th-century church.

Henley-on-Thames is famous for it’s regatta and for my ancient car conking out at the main road intersection in the centre of town, in my university days and being pushed across the road with the help of a local policeman. The first river regatta in the world was held at Henley in 1839. The regatta is now held every July. Henley has a handsome bridge with five arches, a square-towered Perpendicular church and timbered houses, including the 14th-century Chantry House. Its main street is wide and elegantly Georgian, and there is a fine view from the towpath downstream to Temple Island. Remenham Woods rise on the right bank, and a further mile round the curve of the river at Mill End are the picturesque Hambleden Lock and Mill. On the left bank is Fawley Court, later the Divine Mercy College. At Grey's Court, just west of Henley, parts of the 14th-century fortifications to the house remain, and there is a donkey wheel, used in Tudor times for raising water.
