Warwickshire is definitely a musical county, and the tastes of the population seem to be broad in that we get bookings for ceilidh bands, string quartets and jazz bands and similar numbers. It is a tremendous mix of rural countryside, industrial city and spa towns. It's a county steeped in history, with some major castles, and of course it has Stratford-upon-Avon, the birthplace of William Shakespeare, so as a county it has an awful lot going for it. But the band themselves, is quite easy county for travelling, in that there are a motorway through it but good roads of motorway, so there are a choice of routes to get most places. You wanted to be easy travelling for the band, so they are fresh and happy when they arrive, and of course the rigours of travel are why we offer relatively local bands for events.

North-east, across the fields and villages of Warwickshire, a hazy skyline marks the sheep-grazing uplands of Northamptonshire and Leicestershire; and these, in turn, lead to fruitful fields and orchards. Two circular memorials mark the battlefield of Edgehill (1642) in Warwickshire. In November 1605, several of the Gunpowder Plotters fled from Dunchurch, in Warwickshire, crossed Worcestershire to Huddington Court, near Droitwich, and were eventually killed or captured at Holbeche House, near Dudley.

Warwickshire is Shakespeare's county. The land south of his birthplace at Stratford-upon-Avon is known as the Feldon (from the Old English for open country) and the land to the north is known as the Arden (woodland). The Forest of Arden was the setting for Shakespeare's As You Like It, and in Packington Park modern Woodmen of Arden still practise the ancient skill of archery. Footpaths surround exquisite villages such as Welford-on-Avon and Aston Cantlow, where, according to tradition, Shakespeare's parents were married. Warwickshire's village churches hold many surprises, such as Ilmington's carvings of mice in the woodwork, Binton's memorial window to Scott of the Antarctic, and Temple Balsall's headstone to Henry Williams, composer of'It's a Long Way to Tipperary'. Compton Wynyates is a Tudor house, seized by the Parliamentarians in 1644 during the Civil War and used as a garrison for 400 troops. After the war its owners, the Royalist Compton family, had to pay a £20,000 fine to get the house back.

The city of Coventry is a pleasant surprise in a mining and industrial area. The centre bears little outward sign of the city's industrial importance, or of the fact that at the end of the Second World War it was a mass of rubble. The modern shops, cinemas, restaurants and car parks at the heart of the city are set amid flowered public parks, and only the untouched shell of the old cathedral, alongside the new cathedral, recalls the wartime destruction when most of the centre of the city was levelled in one air raid. Green open spaces surround the city, and the countryside to the south has variety and beauty, as well as historical interest. Kenilworth Castle, frequently visited by Elizabeth I and her court, is now in ruins, but is still an impressive sight. Warwick is dominated by another great castle, home of the Earls of Warwick since medieval times. Royal Leamington Spa, in keeping with its name, is a town of graceful terraces, spacious gardens and riverside walks, while further south lies Shakespeare country.

Market Bosworth is a tree-lined avenue leads into this small stone-built market town. The town was recorded in the Domesday Hook, and markets have been held there since 1285. The Dixie family, who bought the local manor house in 1567 and are still in residence, have a royal charter allowing them to operate one of only seven privately owned markets in the country. The church, mainly I4th century, has 15th-century alterations and manv memorials to the Dixie family.

Rugby exhibits an almost totally industrial face, but it lives in history as the rural town of Tom Brown's Schooldays, and as the home of one of the most famous public schools in the country—which gave to the world the sport of Rugby football, though the rules have changed considerably since Thomas Hughes' famous description in his book.

Rugby is a town noted for its important railway junction, called Mugby Junction by Dickens in a story in a special Christmas number of the magazine All The Year Round, and for its public school, founded in 1567. Rugby's distinguished ex-pupils include the poet Matthew Arnold, son of the school's most famous headmaster, Dr Thomas Arnold, who was described by Thomas Hughes, also an ex-pupil, in Tom Brown s Schooldays.

Rugby football originated at the school, and a tablet on a wall inside the close by the school buildings, which can be seen by appointment with the porter, describes 'the exploit of William Webb

Ellis, who with a fine disregard for the rules of football as played in his time, first took the ball in his arms and ran with it, thus originating the distinctive feature of this Rugby game AD 1823'.

Voluntary Redundancy Ceilidh Ringerike Ceilidh / Barn Dance Band ref: 4003.3

Coventry is an important city since the 14th century, with a history dating from Anglo-Saxon times. A nunnery destroyed by the Danes was replaced by a Benedictine monastery founded in the nth century by Leofric, Earl of Mercia. It was his wife, Godiva, who is said to have ridden naked through the streets of Coventry in protest against the oppression of the people by Leofric. The original 'Peeping Tom' who came out to look is commemorated by three statues. One is a i yth-century wooden statue on the first floor of the Leofric Hotel, the second is above a shop-front on Hertford Street, and the third is on a clock overlooking Broadgate, the city's main square; as Lady Godiva crosses the clock, the head of Peeping Tom pops up. A statue to Lady Godiva stands in Broadgate.

On the night of November 14, 1940, 40 acres of the city centre were destroyed by German bombers. After the war, Coventry was rebuilt and a new cathedral was consecrated on May 25, 1962. The blackened ruins of the old cathedral form an approach to the new, and a wooden cross made out of two charred roof timbers has been placed on the original altar with the inscription 'Father Forgive' carved behind it.

The new cathedral, designed by Sir Basil Spence, is an exciting example of modern architecture. The exterior is of pink-grey sandstone in a series of massive vertical structures, stark and Gothic in their effect. Graham Sutherland's vast tapestry of 'Christ in Glory' dominates the nave, which is lit by slanted stained-glass windows throwing strips of light towards the altar.

A few of Coventry's medieval buildings remain—among them St Mary's Hall, once a merchant's guildhall; the Church of the Holy Trinity; St John's Church; St John's Hospital; and the lovely timbered houses in Priory Row. There are also some well-preserved old city gates. But primarily Coventry is a modern city, with well-planned shopping centres, a new civic theatre, the Belgrade, and fine parks and gardens. The University of Warwick is 4 miles south-west of the city.

Royal Leamington Spa is a spacious town on the River Leam, owing its fame to natural spring saline waters, the presence of which was first recorded in 1586. Queen Victoria granted the prefix 'Royal' to the town after a visit in 1838. Leamington has been a fashionable health resort ever since, and the mineral waters can be taken under supervision, at the Royal Pump Room in the town centre. The terraces leading off the main shopping street, The Parade, are fine examples of late Georgian architecture.

Warwick is the county town on the banks of the River Avon is best explored on foot. It is small and compact, and a pleasant blend of Georgian and Tudor architecture. Overlooking the river stands Warwick Castle, which has been in the family of the present earl since 1605. The conservatory in the grounds contains the white marble Warwick Vase, which was found in the ruins of Hadrian's Villa at Tivoli, near Rome, in 1770.

Mill Street, a cul-de-sac ending at the castle wall, has some attractive half-timbered houses. Oken's House, near the castle wall, contains the Joy Robinson doll museum, named after the woman who inherited and enlarged the collection of wood, china, metal and wax dolls and placed it in the museum in 1955.

OKEN'S HOUSE Thomas Oken was one of the principal citizens of Warwick in the i6th century. His house, which survived a fire in i(x)^, is now a museum of dolls

Close to Shire Hall, the county's administrative headquarters, stands St Mary's Church, rebuilt in 1704 after a fire. The 15th-century Beauchamp Chapel, part of the old church, contains the tomb of Richard Beauchamp, Earl of Warwick, who died in Rouen in 1439. It is this Earl who is portrayed in Bernard Shaw's St Joan and who was largely responsible for her execution. Robert Dudley, the Earl of Leicester who entertained Elizabeth I at Kenilworth, is also buried here.

this is a county not just of magnificent stately homes, some anti-ownership and care of the National trust, but it is a county of village halls, delightful village halls and charming villages. This hall is quite a striking modern design, with big windows at one end and let in lots of light. It was built only in 1999, so much newer than the majority of village hall which go back to an era when villagers and local communities were far more sociable than they tend to be now, i.e. pre-TV days. All feel a very spacious opening up into its very high roof, so a great place for anything from a jazz band to a ceilidh band, as in this case

It's now a major wedding venue, golf club, conference centre, you name it, it does it. Because of his extensive nature, it can accommodate just about any kind of event and benefit from just about any kind of music. The Village Hall, Front Street,  Ilmington, Warks , CV36, Warwickshire, West Midlands

this is a real village hall sort of village hall, dating from 1933, it has been extended more recently. The inside has a real old-fashioned look about it, the stage at one end which is always a nice feature, enabling the caller to see over the heads of the nearer dancers, so that they can easily see what is happening to the sets further down the hall. It also means that the dancers can see the band or easily. But this isn't a necessity, I guess the ceilidh bands play at floor level more often than they do on the stage, partly because many venues don't have stages, particularly if it's in a marquee or in a period venue, and partly because those modern hotels that do have stages, normally don't have big enough stages to get a ceilidh band onto safely.

Modern hotel stages tend to be for a keyboard player and vocalist, which doesn't leave much room because there's only two of them and the instrument takes up a small space, but also because a keyboard and vocalist is a fairly static thing. This is very different to a ceilidh band, where the fiddle player is throwing his arms around as he plays, probably leaping about the stage as well for good measure, and the guitarists and bass players are giving it all they've got also moving around the stage as they play. Although if the band was a flautist for whistle player, they won't take up much room, the caller will typically be getting up and down from the stage to go and sort out sets that are getting in a tangle. So barn dance band is quite a dynamic group of people, and you don't want to have the odd player toppling off the stage partway through the performance.

I really don't know whether I prefer playing a ceilidh on the stage or at floor level? They both have their advantages and disadvantages. Being on the stage certainly protects you from revellers hurtling into your and space are knocking over instruments and things, so it is a much more comfortable situation when things get excitable. On the other hand there is a definite additional intimacy when playing at floor level with the dances all around you. Both worked brilliantly, so if you're thinking to hire a barn dance band will book a ceilidh band, don't worry about whether the stage or not, and certainly don't go to any effort trying to hire in staging to a erected a temporary stage, I really don't think it's worth the hassle.

The Welcombe Hotel Spa & Golf ClubWarwick Road Stratford-upon-Avon Warwickshire , CV37 0NR, Warwickshire, West Midlands

this is someplace, set in hundred and 57 acres of landscaped grounds, yes hundred and 57 acres. It also within a shout of Shakespeare's birthplace, and close to the centre of Stratford-upon-Avon. Yes of course it has the golf club, the modern spa, but is based on 19th century neo-Jacobean mansion, and has agreed to listed building. It has everything you would want for a wedding venue, including the staircase which absolutely need to string quartet to be play as the bride makes her entrance, oak panelling and chandeliers, which demand the presence of a string quartet or an elegant harpist to complement the architecture. As a venue that went through the 1920s and 30s period, jazz is a natural adjunct to the venue, and I'm sure the house would have resonated to jazz bands from the early jazz of the 20s and through the swing era that lasted through the wartime years and is still receiving revivals now. And don't forget the ceilidh and barn dance band. This venue can accommodate 200 guests at a wedding, so you must have a dance that can get everybody involved, all 200 of them, all in one go. A disco pales into insignificance compared with this, a barn dance is quite a different kettle of fish. If you've hired the venue, you need either live music to make it complete.
