The River Welland flows under seven bridges through the centre of this splendid old market town of Spalding. Spalding is the centre of an intensively farmed agricultural area and is the capital of 'Tulipland'. The countless tulips and daffodils provide a popular attraction for visitors who drive round the fields in April and early May to view a kaleidoscope of colour across some 10,000 acres.

The town is a happy mixture of old and new buildings. Among the oldest are the 13th-century Church of SS Mary and Nicholas, which has unusual double aisles, and the I4th-centur\ White Hart Inn. The Gentlemen's Society, an antiquarian society founded in 1709-10 and including Sir Isaac Newton and Alexander Pope among its members, displays a bird collection in 15th-century Ayscoughfee Hall, and has a museum in Broad Street.

Wisbech is a flourishing centre of a rich flower and fruit-growing area. The town, surrounded by bulb fields and orchards, is at its loveliest in blossom time and is full of activity during the fruit-picking season. Architecturally, Wisbech is the region's most distinguished town outside Cambridge. North Brink, above the River Nene, is a series of impeccable Georgian houses, no two alike but all the best of neighbours. The bridge is noisy by day but is a fine vantage point in the evening. Close to it is Peckover House, owned by the National Trust. It was built in 1722 by Jonathan Peckover, a Quaker who founded a bank later incorporated in Barclays. In the centre of the town the lovely Crescent, Union Place and Ely Place embrace the castle, now a compact private residence embodying remains of successive castles from Norman times. On the north-east outskirts are two attractive marshland churches at Walsoken, which is mainly Norman, and West Walton, which has a detached 13th-century tower. At Tydd St Giles, 5 miles north, Nicholas Breakspear (d. 1159), the only Englishman to become Pope, as Adrian IV, is said to have been curate.

The Soke (Old English for an administrative area) of Peterborough was once under the jurisdiction of Northamptonshire, then of Huntingdonshire, but now forms part of Cambridgeshire. The city is a market town and an industrial centre. New factories and tower blocks cluster round the cathedral and partly hide its glory, the triple-arched west front. An earlier church was sacked by Hereward the Wake and the Danes, an alliance of old enemies hoping to defeat William the Conqueror. The present building is largely the work of the Norman victors, their massive columns of local Barnack stone rising to the roof with its finely painted ceiling. The 15th-century apse has an efflorescence of fan tracery. An epitaph for Robert Scarlett, the grave-digger who buried both Catherine of Aragon (in the north aisle) and Mary, Queen of Scots (later removed to Westminster Abbey by her son, James I), records that, in his day, he interred twice as many people as the total population of Peterborough.

There are remains of Civil War fortifications outside Old Fletton, now a southern suburb of the city; and Peterborough's guildhall is a market cross with an upper chamber, dating from 1671, set in gardens which were once the market place.

Kimbolton boasts a red-roofed village with a 13th-century church and a medieval castle where Catherine of Aragon spent her last four bitter years. The castle was greatK extended by Henry Montagu, a Lord Chief Justice, who bought it in 1620, two years after sending Sir Walter Raleigh to the scaffold. The most distinctive of further renovations to the castle are those of Vanbrugh at the end of the 171)1 century, with later additions by Robert Adam, including the outer gatehouse and north gateway. The castle is now a school. Montagu became the ist Earl of Manchester, and there are impressive monuments to the Manchester family in the 13th-century St Andrew's Church, which also has a 16th-century screen partially decorated with paintings of kings and angels.

In Roman times Godmanchester was an important settlement on the crossroads of the Via Devana, which ran from Colchester to Chester, and Ermine Street, which linked London with York. It retained its importance and became one of the earliest boroughs, receiving its charter in 1213, but is now amalgamated into one borough with Huntingdon. Between them stretch the 300-acre meadow of Port Holme on one side of a 17th-century raised causeway, and West Side Common on the other, both crossed with pleasant footpaths and loops and runnels from the Great Ouse. The Elizabethan grammar school is near the causeway and there are many old buildings with a variety of gables, dormer windows and colour washes.
