I find Wiltshire a mystifying county musically. It is largely a rural county, with lots of small towns like Marlborough, which are really very upmarket, delightful villages and major towns like Swindon. Yet Swindon, set in this lovely setting, seems to be a classical music desert yet ceilidhs and barn dances thrive. Friend of mine who lives in Swindon, and as a classical musician finds that she has to go anywhere but Swindon for her music. Yet the town is not unmusical by any means, because I've personally played at many Scottish Kayleigh's and Irish ceilidhs, English barn dance an American barn dances in and around Swindon, including a very enjoyable wedding reception at the Railway Museum in the town, playing for dancers was surrounded by huge and magnificent steam locomotives. Perhaps it's the rural nature that engenders the laugh of barn dances, though we have had many jazz bands and jazz trios playing the area to. So my apologies to all the classical music lovers in Swindon who would love to hire a string quartet, I'm sure that my biased view is just a matter of chance, and that there are just as many classical music lovers in the area as in any other part of the country.
Wiltshire has a history going back to antiquity. It has the longest earthwork of its kind in the UK, Wansdyke, that stretches for some 50 miles from Wiltshire across Wiltshire's Marlborough Downs and on across northern Somerset to Dundry Hill, south of Bristol; some people claim to have traced its length for another 30 miles. One of the best-preserved sections of Wansdyke is not far from Bath, south of the village of Corston.
The earthwork consists of a single bank with a ditch on the north side. Its exact origin and purpose are uncertain, but it undoubtedly dates from late in the Roman occupation or shortly after. It was probably built as a boundary between the Mercian people and the West Saxons. The name Wansdyke is in fact Saxon in origin—Woden's Dyke, or ditch. (One of the god Woden's functions was to be the god of tribal boundaries.)
On Stantonbury Hill, to the north of Stanton Prior and on the east of the road from Bath to Wells, is Stantonbury Camp, an Iron Age fortification whose north side is a section of Wansdyke.
This means that when our music groups are travelling to weddings or parties to perform, they are travelling through countryside that have features going back to the stone age. It makes the journey more interesting!

Stonehenge and Woodhenge in Wiltshire, along with grave-mounds throughout the area, and Avebury on the Marlborough Downs, are the most important survivals of prehistoric Britain; it is hard to believe that these great bare uplands were once the main inhabited region of southern England and a place of European importance. By contrast, the county town of Salisbury lies among fertile water-meadows, and the sight of its cathedral spire rising above the trees was a compelling subject for John Constable and for hundreds of lesser painters.

The town of Bradford-on-Avon is quite different in character from any other town in Wiltshire. Almost every route into the town is down a steep incline, and the Bath-stone houses have a unique beauty. The bridge across the Avon has two original medieval arches and a curious domed structure on one side—once a chapel where pilgrims from Malmesbury to Glastonbury

Swindon is the largest industrial town in Wiltshire, which owes the foundation of its prosperity to the old Great Western Railway works. Other industries have overtaken the railway's former dominance, but Brunei's famous railway-village and its neighbouring railway museum just off the town centre have preserved some of the best of the age of steam. Old Swindon, situated on a hill overlooking the 'new' town, still retains a market-town atmosphere with its Georgian inns and houses.

Devizes is a pleasant old market town with some fine Georgian houses and a castle that stands on the site of a Norman stronghold built by the Bishop of Salisbury. On the market cross is an inscription telling the salutary story of the sudden death in 1753 of one Ruth Pierce, after cheating at the local market. The museum has collections of finds from Neolithic, Bronze Age and Iron Age sites in Wiltshire.

Melksham is an industrial town on the banks of the Avon. Only a few woods survive of forests which were once a favourite hunting ground of the Plantagenet kings. By the I7th century, Melksham was one of the great weaving towns of Wiltshire, and good I7th and i8th-century houses in Canon Square recall this period of prosperity.

Corsham is a small town on the southernmost point of the Cotswolds. The Flemish-gabled cottages on the cobbled street and the honey-coloured, baroque pedimented Hungerford almshouses all derive from its wealthy past as a weaving village. The school adjoining the alms-houses has its original seating arrangement, with the master's pulpit desk of 1668 still in place.
Corsham Court, an Elizabethan mansion of 1582, has an impressive pedimented gateway. Capability Brown, the famous 18th-century landscape gardener, laid out the fine park with its elm avenue. The state rooms are filled with old masters and superb furniture.

Chippenham is a stone-built town on the Avon, with an ancient market-place at its heart. The twin-gabled 15th-century town hall, with an unusual wooden turret, is probably the town's oldest building. The Hungerford Chapel of the parish church has many monuments of the i5th century, and some going back to the ijth century. The Grove was once the site of an early iSth-century spa, and Ivy House dates from c. 1730. At Hardon-huish (pronounced Harnish), just outside Chippenham, John Wood the Younger, of Bath, built the elegant Georgian church with its Venetian windows.

From medieval times until the Industrial Revolution, north-west Wiltshire made its wealth from weaving, and many fine houses in rich, cream-coloured Bath limestone remain from this affluent period. Indeed, the special charm of this area today lies in the character of its towns and villages, such as Charlton, Biddestone and Yatton Keynell.

MM Warrant Officers' & Sergeants' Mess MOD Lyneham, Chippenham, Wiltshire, SN15 4XX, Wiltshire
military mess events are always something that the band looked forward to. Why is that? I live in a ceilidh band, then they know that the dancers are going to be fit, energetic and really up for it, which makes a hell of a lot of difference to the musicians enjoyment of the occasion. There's nothing worse than playing for a miserable bunch of people who can't get off their backsides to dance, whereas when everybody is up for the event and raring to go, that in itself creates a level of excitement of the music adds to and builds on. Certainly in the wedding business, you sometimes get people booking a music group, not because they enjoy music, but because it's a fashionable add-on to their wedding day. Such events can be somewhat laborious, but fortunately it is rare as people, especially nowadays, to splash out their hard earned cash to Booker band unless it's something they really want, which is actually a good thing.
When one comes the army, you know that they are going to give it there own. After all, in some respects, the barn dance is like a military parade or exercise in that it is a group activity that requires coordination with other people to achieve a complex and precisely timed result. So in some ways, going into a barn dance is very similar to going into a battle, except that this is a fun battle and now one (in theory) should get hurt, though at the speed the real enthusiasts go at it, and if the band are really up to playing at full tilt, they can be some entertaining minor spills.
Another thing that is important for the band is the food is that they will get their break. Part of the contract when booking a band, is that they need to be supplied with food in the break, as playing in a ceilidh band is as energetic for the musicians as dancing is for the guests. One thing that the army is certainly good for his food. Some very wise French guy made the comment that "an army marches on its stomach"but what he missed out was that so does a ceilidh band, and you shouldn't have made that mission as the French are very good at their folk music, especially accordion music.

I mentioned earlier on these pages about playing the in the steam museum. Well, this was the event I was talking about, and I played at it with my band. (Yes, I also play in a band as well as being a member of the music agency. I have to at, one said agency on the front, and the other says musician on the front, and I swap them over as appropriate.) I'd never thought of putting on a ceilidh in the museum before this happened, and I wondered what it would be like. It was great. Many of the guests were railway enthusiasts, as were Mark and David, but then that fitted well with two of the band members, one of whom regularly regaled me with monologues of great Railway disasters as we drive to Giggs. So he was happy as Larry at this event, just from being surrounded by so many amazing locomotives, without the added fun of playing to such great bunch of people.

The countryside, too, has the appeal of unspoilt rusticity. Low-lying agricultural land, watered by the Lower Avon, stretches south from Malmesbury to Chippenham and Melksham, and eastwards to Wootton Bassett. Westwards the land rises sharply or dips into wooded dells which shelter famous beauty spots such as Bradford-on-Avon and Castle Combe.

Cricklade is the only town in Wiltshire on the River Thames, which at this point is merely a channel. The wide main street has good i yth and 18th-century houses, and just beyond the town is the 13th-century priory, now divided into small houses. The parish church of St Sampson has a cathedral-like turreted tower built by the Duke of Northumberland in 1553, some good Norman features and splendid carved heraldic work.

there this is simply enormous site, and offers postgraduate education members of the Armed Forces and MoD civil servants. It's a huge campus, and you have to get there to the gates in plenty of time to get through security and then find a way to the relevant building to unload equipment. I'm just a little worried at this moment in that I went on to the Internet just to remind myself of the layout of the site, went to the government website in the section about the defence Academy, was confronted by a statement that said "defence Academy of the United Kingdom has a separate website", clicked on the link to that separate website that was shown on our governments website page, to be confronted with a message "404 – file or directory not found". Is this the latest government cutback in defence spending? Has the defence Academy suddenly been abolished? Indeed has the army been abolished? It doesn't fill one with great confidence!

Marlborough is a town noted for having one of the widest main streets in the country. The broad, sloping High Street of splendid Georgian buildings and colonnaded shops obscures many fascinating back alleys with quaint, medieval, half-timbered cottages that escaped a big fire in 1653. The town has attracted tourists since the days of the stage-coach and has some excellent inns and hotels.
At each end of the High Street is a fine church. St Peter's has a well-proportioned, late-Perpendicular tower, where a curfew bell is rung every night; and St Mary's, also Perpendicular, has a Norman door, the rest of the church being restored after a fire in 1653. An enclosed, arched bridge at the western end of the town leads to Marlborough College, the public school built in 1843 on the site of an old castle. Near by is a mound called Maerl's Barrow, which gives the town its name; deer antlers dating from Neolithic times have been unearthed here.
A few minutes' walk south-east from the centre of Marlborough is a corner ot the Savernake Forest. The Fyfield Down Nature Reserve, 3 miles west, contains some great sarsen stones.
