Lancashire has a long tradition of folk music and dance, with clog dancing being a favourite pastime in the days of the Industrial Revolution. Clogs, often with metal inserts, were former footwear for many working class people, and indeed in the heavy industries like steel industry, they were still warm up until the 1980s in certain factories, as you can walk on red-hot steel in clocks. The great things about clogs was that they clattered, and so could be used during dancing to click out a rhythm. Although clogging in England can be traced back to the early 1400s, there are still a lot of clog dance groups in all parts of the country today, but these are not the sort of folk groups you would normally book for a birthday party or wedding reception.

Of course this is something quite different the sort of ceilidh and barn dance music and dancing that you might hire for a birthday party or wedding reception, but it all relates, many of the tunes used for clog dancing are of English origin. I've read that there was even a branch of the art of clog dancing that was done on canal boats, rather a restricted pastime odour thought, especially as most canal boats would have been full with goods being transported in the amount of room available for dancing would be minimal, but then if you look at the traditional Irish step dancing, that is designed to be done in confined spaces, so perhaps there are similarities there.

Music wasn't restricted to folk music of course, with Manchester being the home of the world-famous Halle Orchestra, which gave the first performance of Sir Edward Elgar (a local lad to me) Symphony number one. St John Barbirolli was one of its most famous conductors, and in musical circles there is a plethora of witticisms that he was supposed to have made, but who knows if they were really from him? It was also the orchestra that my very first violin teacher, a delightful Armenian by the name of Gasparian once belonged to, so I have a rather soft spot the orchestra.

Lancashire is the most varied of the nortii-western counties. It has a windy moorland at its heart, and a great industrial tradition which grew first on cotton, 200 years ago, then on coal-mining, chemicals and engineering. In contrast, the fertile Lancashire plain has rural, wooded country, with sheltered hamlets and tiny villages around Pendle Hill. Further north is the rugged Bowland Forest and, beyond this, the green valley of the River Lune. Limestone hills rise north of Morecambe Bay, and the peninsula of Furness is rich in iron ore.

Blackburn has a history of cotton weaving dates back to the I4th century, when it became the home of Flemish weavers. Rapid expansion came with the Industrial Revolution; full-scale working models of Hargreaves's 'spinning jenny' and Crompton's 'spinning mule', an improved version of the 'jenny', can be seen at the Lewis Textile Museum in Exchange Street. Old mills, some still in use, crowd round the Bolton Road locks of the Leeds and Liverpool Canal, and the crisp shapes of new multistorey buildings can be seen from Witton Park and Corporation Park.

At Hoghton Tower, a fine 16th-century house on a hill 4 miles southwest, James I is reputed to have dubbed a loin of prime Lancashire beef 'Sir Loin' in jest, on a progress through the county in 1617. The house contains some fine 17th-century panelling.

Clitheroe has a ruined Norman keep on a limestone cliff stands above the grey roofs of this pleasant market town, which was granted its charter in the I2th century. Pendle Hill, 1831 ft, rises 4 miles to the east. Footpaths lead to the summit, from which spectacular views extend westwards to the Forest of Bowland, and to the flat Fylde Plain and the Irish Sea beyond. In 1652 George Fox had a vision on the summit which led him to preach and form the Society of Friends. Pendle Hill has also been associated with devil-worship; 19 of the witches tried at Lancaster Castle in 1612 were from the Pendle and Samlesbury area, and ten of them were sent to the gallows.

Blackpool is a lively, crowded, jostling resort, busiest during summer when the Lancashire factories and mills close down for their annual 'wakes', or holidays. The town began to develop as a recreational resort in the mid-18th century, and its popularity has grown with the years; now it has a resident population of 152,000 and attracts 8 million visitors during the summer season. The 6-mile promenade, well known for its spectacular autumn illuminations, is dominated by the 518-ft Blackpool Tower, which contains a fine aquarium, a zoo, a circus and a dance hall. There are four theatres in the town, and funfair thrills from dodgems to bingo are to be found along the stretch of the promenade known as the 'Golden Mile', and on the three piers. The trams on the sea-front are the only survivors of their kind in England.

By contrast, there are inland walks to Anchorsholme, 4 miles north, and the 3OO-acre Stanley Park has a rose garden, a boating lake and a golf course. The Grundy Art Gallery in Queen Street has a fine collection of works by lyth and 20th-century British artists.

Fleetwood is one of Britain's chief fishing ports, at the mouth of the Wyre Estuary. The peaks of the Lake District can be seen to the north across Morecambe Ba} in clear weather, while the view to the east extends across the Lune Valley to the distant Pennines. The town has splendid sands, fine gardens and a pool for model yachts. Trawlers can be watched returning to port at dawn from fishing grounds as far away as Iceland.

The northern bank of the River Mersey was first settled in the 1st century AD. By 1200 there was a fishing village on the Mersey, which was granted a charter by King John in 1207. Trading with the West Indies, and the slave trade, led to a surge of expansion in the late ryth and early i8th centuries, but it was not until the coming of the steamships in the i84o's that Liverpool began to take on its modern form. The steamships were introduced just as the Irish potato famine caused millions of Irishmen to emigrate. Tens of thousands got only to Liverpool.

Two tunnels under the Mersey connect Liverpool to Birkenhead. There is also a passenger ferry from the Pier Head landing stage in Liverpool to Birkenhead and Seacombe, and the best view of Liverpool's 7 miles of waterfront is obtained from one of these ferries. Dominating the busy scene is the Liver (pronounced Lie-ver) Building—the offices of the Royal Liver Friendly Society. Its two main towers are topped by 'Liver' birds, mythical birds from which the city is said to have taken its name. Underneath is the largest floating landing stage in the world, stretching for half a mile on 200 pontoons. The central docks are used by vessels bound for Ireland. Gladstone Dock, further north, commemorates the Victorian statesman who was born in Liverpool at 62 Rodney Street, which still has fine Georgian houses.

Liverpool's two modern cathedrals, both on high ground overlooking the city, are examples of two distinct kinds of ecclesiastical architecture. The Anglican Liverpool Cathedral, begun in 1904 by Sir Giles Gilbert Scott but still not completed, is built of red sandstone in Gothic style. It was damaged by bombs in the Second World War, and its fine peal of bells was first rung in 1951. Its aisles are unusual in being built as tunnels through the walls, and there is much fine stained glass. The Roman Catholic Metropolitan Cathedral was designed by Sir Frederick Gibberd and consecrated in 1967. The glass was designed by John Piper and Patrick Reyntiens. The building was originally designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens as a huge Classical domed building, but the war and soaring costs dictated the change of plan to a more contemporary design.

Liverpool is famed for its enlightened patronage of the arts. The Walker Art Gallery has a fine collection of European and English paintings, which includes Pre-Raphaelites. The Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra plays in the Philharmonic Hall, which was bought for the orchestra by the city. The University of Liverpool is expanding rapidly, and the Mossley Hill area will eventually become a university 'village' accommodating nearly 1500 students. Liverpool's poets, artists, writers and entertainers have made a lasting mark on the cultural life of the nation, particularly since the emergence of the Liverpool-born Beatles to international fame in the I96o's.

The city is famous for its sport, too. Goodison Park, Everton's ground, is one of the biggest football stadiums in Britain. Anfield, Liverpool's ground, has the famous 'Kop', where chanting fans pack the steep terraces behind one of the goals. Aintree Racecourse is the scene of the Grand National in the spring. Wild animals abound in the Knowsley Safari Park, which has lions, giraffes and a large herd of elephants.

A semicircle of industrial towns, including Crosby, Bootle, Kirkby, St Helens and Widnes, lies between Liverpool and the low-lying agricultural region beyond. This was marshland until it was reclaimed in the late i7th and early i8th centuries; now it is fertile farming land ideal for potato-growing

this is an important Liverpool wedding venue, but I wonder if bride and grooms ever feel nervous by the name of Titanic, which is presumably related to the ill-fated ship. White is the British always want remember the disasters, and tend to shut their successes under the carpet, I really don't know. Isn't it wonderful to be British. I've played with my string quartet at a number of Titanic Memorial dinners, which I've always found rather strange events, especially as all the musicians on board the boat as far as I am aware, were drowned. But this is a very interesting hotel all round, and it even has a Rum Warehouse, health and fitness pool (presumably to work off the effects of the rum fumes in the warehouse, and a hydrotherapy pool. I once played in a swimming pool with a string quartet, at the side not in the water, and it was unsurprisingly a humid and echoey experience.

the venue described this rather like an ocean liner on land, referring to their crew who run and organise the marriage ceremony and reception, that can cater up for 250 guests. There is plenty of room here for a barn dance or ceilidh, and thankfully, unlike on a ship, the floor doesn't rock. Not that that can't be quite fun, I remember years ago dancing to a band on a ship going to Norway in the store. He didn't have to dance exactly, you just let your feet stagger down the sloping dancefloor as it healed one side, and stagger in the opposite direction healed to the other side, and by waving your hand around a bit at the same time it looked as if you are dancing, but no effort.

this is a restaurant and hotel in the grandest style, the building itself being built by an extremely wealthy merchant in 1857, thus is from the Victorian era when the rich knew how to be rich. I wonder if back in the Victorian days in the turn-of-the-century there was a string quartet in residence? This sort of thing was quite common back then, there are only a few places like the Pump Rooms in Bath that can host a resident quartet.

Lancaster, the county town, takes its name from the Roman castrum, or camp, built beside the Lune on this site. The imposing medieval castle, with a Norman keep, on Castle Hill dominates the old grey city below. John of Gaunt, Duke of Lancaster and father of Henry IV, enlarged the castle, and Elizabeth I added fortifications as a defence against the Armada. It was a Parliamentary stronghold in the Civil War, and since the i8th century it has housed courts and a jail. The magnificent priory and parish church of St Mary, mainly Perpendicular in style but partly dating back to Saxon times, stands alongside; the wood-carving on its 14th-century choir stalls is some of the finest in Britain.

A tree-lined quay is a reminder ot the days when the city was a port handling a bigger tonnage than Liverpool; the mid-i8th-century Custom House, with its graceful Ionic columns, still has charm. The city has many fine Georgian houses. The high-domed Ashton Memorial was opened in 1009 in memory of the Williamson family, who gave the city the fine park in which the memorial stands.
