North-east Essex, bounded by water-meadows, willows and noble churches along the River Stour, is a region of beauty and peace, with its roots deep in English history. Colchester was one of the greatest Roman fortress-cities in England after London. Traces of Anglo-Saxon occupation exist in names along shining creeks—Langenhoe, Fingringhoe and Wivenhoe. The Normans came later, and Norman-
French names linger in village names such as Tolleshunt D'Arcy, Layer Breton and Layer-de-la-Haye. There is a rare Knights Templar church at Little Maplestead; the ruins of a mighty Norman castle stand at Castle Hedingham; and Colchester has one of the largest Norman keeps in Europe.
The coast is a maze of opalescent mud-flats and winding creeks, tide-washed islands of green samphire (an edible marsh plant) and purple sea-lavender, the 'heather' of the sea. The tides creep in like silk through uninhabited marshes where wild duck, sheep and cattle abound, and only curlews and redshanks break the summer silence. Smugglers came up the creeks where the Vikings were before them. Today yachtsmen, small-boat sailors and smacksmen sail the waters which the long-ships sailed.

earth of farming country, with former spinning and weaving villages—a region
blending history with beauty, and as yet little spoilt by development.

Colchester is an almost the perfect marriage between old and new, standing on a hill in rolling country. First it was the capital city, probably wooden and stockaded, of 'Old King Cole', the ancient British chieftain Cunobelin who reigned over much of south-east England. Then a great Roman city was built on the site by Claudius in AD 49-50. Boadicea, Queen of the Iceni, sacked it in AD 60 in a rising against the Romans. The Normans gave it a great castle. Cromwell's army besieged the town in 1648, after which the two Royalist commanders of the defences were executed as rebels.

The older houses include one in East Street that has fine pargetting, or decorated plasterwork. you might not think that Railway Museum would be a good place to hold a wedding, but you'd be absolutely wrong. I personally haven't played at this Railway Museum, but I've played at Railways Museum in Swindon, and it was simply amazing. We were putting on a ceilidh for a civil partnership celebration, and it was completely surreal playing with my ceilidh band surrounded behind these magnificent steam engines. Another great advantage is the railway museums are simply huge places, and the sound of the music echoes reverberates around the building and bounces of the steam engines in railway carriages and creates a wonderful atmosphere. Yes, railway museums are perfect places for weddings and birthday parties, but you really do have to like steam trains I guess.

the main function room, with its many crystal chandeliers, has plenty of room for a large wedding with plenty of space for the string quartet or harpist to locate themselves without dominating the proceedings (which is important, as the focus should always be on the bride and groom). There are some columns in the room, which can make a barn dance or ceilidh quite exciting, as these have to be avoided, but it doesn't cause any problem, just a bit more hilarity.
