The River Lea, on which the Ware is built, is now used by pleasure boats and anglers, but once carried heavy traffic from the local malting industry. The Great Bed of Ware, 10 ft wide and 11 ft long, mentioned in Shakespeare's Twelfth Night, was once in The Saracen's Head at Ware. It is now in the Victoria and Albert Museum. Ware is also famed as John Gilpin's destination on his runaway ride in William Cowper's poem. The church is mainly I4th and 15th century, with attractive monuments. Jane Grey was proclaimed Queen at Ware in 1553.

Hertford, the county town's situation, remote from main through roads, has left it comparatively unspoilt. There was a settlement on the site long before the Romans, and there are the ruins of a Norman castle on the site of an earlier Saxon stronghold, built to protect London from the Danes. The town centre has a Victorian Corn Exchange, handsome buildings and decorated plaster-work. The Shire Hall which stands in the middle of the town was built in 1769, and was designed by Robert Adam.

Knebworth House is mostly the work of the Lytton family. Sir Robert Lytton began building a Tudor mansion in 1492 on the site of an earlier castle. The 19th-century Lyttons, including the i st Lord Lytton, novelist and politician, rebuilt this in Gothic style. The church, in the 26o-acre park, was built in the I2th century and is full of 18th-century family memorials. The modern town of Knebworth lies to the east, across the A1 motorway. The Church of St Martin's was designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens.

Aston, 2 miles north-east, has a 16th-century mansion, Aston Bury, thatched cottages and barns and a 13th-century church. Bcnington, i4 miles further north-east, has 16th-century cottages beside the village green, a 14th-century church and theruinsof a moated Norman castle. this is now large church, and the site of the Benedictine monastery, dating from 792. Presumably it was on some sort of fault line or close by, because the church built on the site later was destroyed by an earthquake in 1298, having previously been partly destroyed by what was described as a great wind in 1115 (so there's been extreme weather long before anybody thought of the idea of global warming). The present church dates from the 14th century. Being a fairly large church, there is ample room for the string quartet for the harpist to sit in a location where they can be heard, remain in contact with the progression of the wedding ceremony (which is important as timing is crucial, and it's often very difficult for the string quartet or harpist to know when the bride is ready to make her entrance, when she has reached her position ceremony and bring the music to stop, et cetera). It's surprising how many vicars don't appreciate that musicians playing at a wedding have to be able to see what is happening and can't read the vicar's minds are now by telepathy went stop playing or begin playing.
