 Aldermaston brings back some interesting memories. Many years ago when I was at university at Redding, I played in a folk band that put on a Burns night Scottish ceilidh for the research centre in Aldermaston. A must have been over 300 people at the event (which wasn't at this venue, but I can't remember where it was exactly, university days are quite a long way off from me!). I do remember that there were three dance teams who arrived by coach to give demonstration dancing before the general dancing began. It was all very proper and traditional Scottish. However, most the rest of the dancers couldn't do the complex dances the teams were doing, and I do remember when we moved on to the more straightforward dances that everybody can enjoy, two of the teams got annoyed and went home. All very petty I thought. Members of the other team took it all in good spirit enjoyed joining in with the rest of the dancing. It was these people who were getting into the real spirit of a true Scottish ceilidh, where it isn't about being clever and up yourself, it's about everybody having a good time, no matter whether their expert dancers or complete novices, with their young or old. The true and genuine Scottish tradition is to be all-inclusive, and this is the way that our ceilidh and barn dance band treat an event.

   The name of Aldermaston is today more associated with the atomic research establishment sited near by, but it remains a delightful old village on a wooded hillside south of the Kennet. Its mainly 12th-century church is surrounded by magnificent cedars, yews, limes and elms.

Stratfield Save House, seven miles to the south-east, is the seat of the Duke of Wellington. The house dates from 1630 and was bought, with the estate, by the first Duke of Wellington in 1817 with money voted to him by Parliament in recognition of his military achievements

 The first river regatta in the world was held at Henley in 1839. The regatta is now held every July. Henley has a handsome iSth-century bridge with five arches, a square-towered Perpendicular church and timbered houses, including the 14th-century Chantry House. Its main street is wide and elegantly Georgian, and there is a fine view from the towpath downstream to Temple Island. Remenham Woods rise on the right bank, and a further mile round the curve of the river at Mill End are the picturesque Hambleden Lock and Mill. On the left bank is iyth-century Fawley Court, now the Divine Mercy College. At Grey's Court, just west of Henley, parts of trie 14th-century fortifications to the house remain, and there is a donkey wheel, used in Tudor times for raising water.

 A largely Victorian town which owes everything ro its great royal castle. Near the hill on which it is built were once sited a fortress used by the ancient Britons and by Julius Caesar, and a palace used bv Saxon kings. The castle, founded by William the Conqueror, first became a royal residence in the reign of Henry I, and incorporates additions dating Irom that time to the -reign oi Queen Victoria. Much of the castle visible from the river was built after 1824. The Lower Yard contains St George's Chapel, the finest example of Perpendicular architecture in England. It owes much to Edward IV and Henry VIII.
