This is Royal Berkshire. Royalty means wealth, and wealth in historic times meant music, entertainment, minstrels, grand balls, and chamber music. It even meant Pop Music, though the pop music of the past was composers like Mozart, Lehar and Johan Straus. The county still is a centre for music and dancing. When I was at Reading University, (not in the music department, as I was reading physics then engineering science) I was associated with the music department, having violin lessons there, playing in a very up market chamber orchestra in the Berkshire area, and subsidising my student grant (it was freely available then, not like now with student loans!), by playing in a ceilidh and barn dance band which performed all over the south of England, being lead by an absolutely superb accorionist. (He played Bach's Tocata & Fugue for my wedding, a splendid performance, into which he managed to cunningly slip a couple of folk tunes!!) I also played for the university Playford Society, and with the Reading University Folk Dance Society performed at the Sidmouth international folk festival (which was a big event in those days, before it sadly petered out), and played at the Monaco International Folk Festival. Very up market. Ah, those were the days, before families and mortgages and responsibilities. But back to Berkshire: - it is a delightful county.

The gentle water-meadows of the infant River Thames form the boundary between Oxfordshire and Berkshire. South of the river lie the rich, flat farmlands of the Vale of the White Horse, named after the great chalk figure cut in ancient times

into the bold escarpment of the Berkshire Down which border the Vale to the south.

Most of the river bank can be walked; there is goo fishing in the waters, which are popular too for small boat sailing. The fame of Bablock Hythe, mentions by Matthew Arnold in 'The Scholar-Gypsy', hs brought riverside huts and caravans, but there unspoilt charm higher upstream at two crossing points—Newbridge, and the triple-arched bridg spanning the river at Radcot—both of which ai believed to have been completed by the I4th century At Newbridge an attractive inn, The Rose Revive provides a quiet patio from which to watch the river mirror-like surface.

This is an area rich in literary associations. Tl poets William Morris, Dante Gabriel Rosser Alexander Pope and Matthew Arnold all lived here. * did Thomas Hughes, who wrote about the area in t first chapters of Tom Brown's Schooldays. Hughes al wrote a Victorian best-seller. The Scouring of t White Horse, in which he perpetuated the myths a local stories connected with the White Horse and with Alfred the Great, who was born at Wantage.

The abundance of myths is understandable in area so much of which belongs to a very old England with the prehistoric Ridge Way, a Roman road ai relics of Celtic times and earlier.

the hall is a single story brick building with rooflights. There's also the option of a licensed bar run by the social club, which can be used for private parties and weddings. Make sure that there is a free tab for two rounds of drinks the musicians of the band. It is very strange that if you are playing in a ceilidh or barn dance band, it just doesn't feel right without a point or two in the evening, whereas when playing in a string quartet perhaps for a wedding ceremony or the drinks reception, it feels quite wrong to drink anything. Indeed, when I've been offered a drink was playing with my string quartet, I've generally declined, whereas one play with my ceilidh band, if for any reason it is a dry evening, it can be very difficult to get the music going.

The fortunes of this prosperoas racing centre were tounded in the early part of the 16th century by Jack of Newburv, who was England's greatest clothier at one time. He also paid for the rebuilding of St Nicholas's church, which was used as a guardroom and hospital in the Civil War. The remains can still be seen of the house in Northbrook Street where he entertained Hcnrx \ II.

Beyond the small bridge over the Kennet lies the market-place with its old cloth hall, a marvel of Jacobean woodwork. A mile to the north are the ruins of Donnington Castle, which bears scars from the Civil War, when it was successfully defended three times by the Royalist Sir John Boys.

this is a country Manor house wedding venue with a wedding barn. Civil wedding ceremonies can be conducted in the barn, with seating for up to hundred and fifty people. This means there's plenty of room for a string quartet to set themselves up and play, without being obtrusive. Sometimes in very cramped wedding venues it can be difficult for the string quartet to find somewhere to play without distracting from the bride and groom, who are of course important focus of everyone, not the string quartet. On the other hand, if the ceremony room is cramped, sometimes the quartet have to play in another room adjoining the ceremony room, or find some cubbyhole in which to perform from. This is similarly unsatisfactory, as they can be so far from what is happening that they lose contact with the proceedings. Finding the correct location for the string quartet, or harpist is very important for the success of the wedding and his music.

the centre is in the village of Kings Claire, with its flint faced church delightful pub overlooking the church at. This is Watership Down country, I've spent several very pleasant lunchtimes in a pub not far from Kings Claire, it was evidently the local for Richard Adams, the author. I recall the look I got when I asked if rabbit pie was on the menu. I guess everybody asked that question, so probably sick and tired of being asked. Perhaps I should stick to playing music!

Anyway back to the subject in hand. The centre has a large all with a wide stage that is very suitable for the Scottish ceilidh that is held here someone ago.

Though the town is the focal point of numerous main roads, a bypass lets through traffic avoid its busy centre.

The delightful village of Basing, i-j miles cast, is threatened today by the advance of industrial building from Basingstoke as it was threatened in the past by Cromwell's army. Basing House, a ruin with a 16th-century gatehouse and a dovecot, was the centre of a two-year siege in the Civil War, at the end of which, in 1645, the Marquess of Winchester and his Royalist followers were overwhelmed by Parliamentarian forces led by Cromwell in person.

The Elvetham Hotel Hartley Wintney Hampshire, RG27 8AS, Berkshire

this is an absolutely stupendous wedding venue. It's gardens and estate occupying some 8000 acres, has a history that goes back to the 11th century. , Where he entertained Queen Elizabeth the first in 1591. This event put modern parties and weddings to shame, lasting for four complete days. This would have been great business for us if we'd been around at the time, think of how many string quartets, harpist, jazz bands and ceilidh and barn dance band could have been absorbed within the range of luxurious pavilions that were built to accommodate the Queen and her entourage!

Unfortunately the original house that had been visited by Queen Elizabeth got burnt down in 1840, and was rebuilt in 1860. The court building was originally the stables. St Mary Church dates from 1840, but is today deconsecrated.

I think it's a rather interesting building for a village hall, with some fine tall brick chimney pots. Somewhat more stylish than the typical prefab or purely rectangular village hall that is so common around the country. Of course, if one is having a birthday party or anniversary party, outside appearance doesn't really matter because the music soon sets the atmosphere and all external forms become lost.
