Stourport-on-Severn

Until the late i8th century, when the canals were built, Stourport was a quiet village. Then it became a bustling commercial centre, the busiest inland port in the Midlands after Birmingham. Today the canals are used mainly for pleasure boats. For the tourist on foot there are some fine Georgian houses and an iron bridge built in 1870.

The town has half-timbered and Georgian houses and a Tudor inn, The Royal Oak. The 18th-century church has several effigies and tombs, and a 12th-century tower with Norman windows.

Worcester

This ancient city, dominated by its magnificent cathedral, stands on the banks of the River Severn in the centre of a rich, fertile plain. It is compact enough for wandering in, and is rich in old buildings, including Greyfriars, a timbered Franciscan house of 1480. The Dyson Perrins Museum has one of the world's finest collections of Worcester porcelain and bone china. The splendid iSth-century guildhall displays Civil War armour used at the Battle of Worcester in 1651.

The cathedral was started in 1084 and has a beautiful crypt ^built by Bishop Wulfstan; the choir stalls were added in the I3th century, and the tower in the 14th century. Among the many monuments is the tomb of King John, including an effigy of his face. One of the best views of the cathedral is from the modern Giffard Hotel in the cathedral precincts. The cathedral overlooks one of the most peaceful and beautiful cricket grounds in England.

The Methodist Church of St Andrew-has a very different setting, standing over a shopping arcade high above Pump Street. It was opened in 1968 and is reached by lift, or winding staircase beside a large, colourful stained-glass window in modern abstract style. All that remains of the 15th-century St Andrew's Church is a tower and spire 250 ft high above riverside gardens. Its local name is the Glover's Needle.

A large, attractive village on the River Avon, which has a 14th-century tithe barn. Bredon Hill, 3 miles north-east, rises to 961 ft; there is a castellated Gothic folly on its slopes, and the remnants of prehistoric and Roman earthworks on its summit. From the folly there is a magnificent view of the Avon winding its way round the hill through large meadows, which are commonland, and across the plain of Malvern.

Malvern

Sheltered by hills from the west wind, Great Malvern is an underrated holiday spa and a splendid walking centre. Apart from its spa it has an active Festival Theatre, for long associated with performances of the plays ot Barrie and Shaw. It also has a heated outdoor swimming pool and lido, good boating and fishing, a nine-hole golf course, a concert hall, winter gardens and children's entertainments.

Above all, Malvern has the hills—not for mountain climbing, but for free, unfettered and untrammelled walking, easy enough for anyone who is reasonably fit. The hills provide magnificent views westwards towards Wales, and eastwards across garden-like, patchwork scenery to Warwickshire. The hills are protected by the Malvern Hills Conservators, who have planted trees and maintain the many footpaths.
