An avenue of limes leads to Charlecote Park, a massive Elizabethan mansion set in fine, open parkland where deer roam. It was here that Shakespeare is said to have been caught poaching deer by the irate landlord.' The story goes that he was birched and, in revenge, wrote lampoons on Sir Thomas Lucy, but when the authorship was discovered, fled to London, and so began his career. Charlecote, built by Sir Thomas Lucy in 1558, is now owned by the National Trust.

Compton Wynyates

One of the most beautiful houses in England—a superb example of Tudor architecture, little altered in later centuries. The stone and weathered brick of the exterior stand out against the dark green of the yews and hedges, which are tailored into neat, formal shapes. Behind the house, which has corkscrew Tudor chimneys, undulating countryside stretches away to the horizon. The name Compton recalls the family who built this house between 1480 and 1528. 'Wynyates' is Old English for 'valley through which the wind blows'.

The house was largely built of material salvaged by a member of the Compton family from the ruins of Fulbrook Castle, near Warwick. It contains a banqueting hall with a minstrels' gallery and a priest's hiding hole, skilfully concealed. An escape route used to lead from the hole out to the moat. But the house was captured by Cromwell's troops and returned to the Royalist Compton family on condition that the escape route was permanently blocked up.

Ther is a fine view from the top of the tower.

Farnborough Hall, built in Italianat style, lies in a hollow on the other side a the valley and is owned by the Nations Trust. Shottery

The village is only a mile west of thi centre   of  Stratford-upon-Avon,   an. Anne   Hathaway's   cottage   is   clearl signposted. The 'cottage' is in fact thatched house of 12 rooms. The sectioin of the house furthest from the road was badly damaged by fire in late 1969, but it has now been fully restored. In the parlour is the uncomfortable narrow bench, or settle, where Shakespeare is thought to have courted his future bride. In spring and summer the typically English cottage gardens are ablaze with flowers, including some fine roses.
