Bisley
This charming village high on a hill is called 'Bisley-God-Help-Us' by the locals because of the winter wind. It has much to interest the tourist, including spring-fed fountains, a igth-century lock-up, a Saxon cross and the Bear Inn, which has two secret passages and a priest's hole. There is a riding school, 2 miles west, where ponies can be hired.

Bourton-on-the-Water
A beautiful village with the little River Windrush flowing down its main street under low bridges beside trees and lawns. The village becomes crowded in midsummer and on fine weekends; but at quieter times there are charming walks along roads lined by beautiful Cotswold stone houses.

Cheltenham
One of the foremost spas in England, and a lively centre of music, art and sport. The only alkaline springs in Britain run underground in the area and are drawn at the Pump Room where the waters can be taken.
The Promenade is a wide and spacious street with splendid Regency houses, trees and statues. The Pittville Pump Room, with its colonnade and dome, is the town's most beautiful building. The Cheltenham Music Festival was started in 1944 with the intention of fostering contemporary British music. First performances of works by Sir Arthur Bliss, Benjamin Britten, Sir Arnold Bax, Malcolm Arnold and many other British composers have been given there. There is also a fine cricket ground and a steeplechase course in Prestbury Park.

Chipping Campden
An old town of Cotswold stone houses nestling among the hills. The mainly 15th-century church has a 14th-century chancel and a stately 120 ft high tower. Inside there are excellent brasses. The town's finest building is the Jacobean market hall. Hidcote Manor Garden to the north-east, a most delightful garden, is open to the public.

Cirencester
A rewarding touring centre for walking, motoring or riding. The old town, called Corinium by the Romans, was, after London, the largest town in Britain in the 2nd century. Three Roman roads, Akeman Street, the Foss Way and one of the two Ermine Streets, radiate from Cirencester. The site of the old town has been excavated and there are many exciting Roman finds, including coins and mosaics, in the museum. The remains of an amphitheatre lie on Querns Hill, near the town centre.
Cirencester has blended old with new, and its more modern buildings fit in gracefully with the old houses of Cotswold stone. The 15th-century church, built when Cirencester was the greatest wool market in England, has a magnificent nave and screen and some fine brasses. There is a Tudor inn with an 18th-century facade, and a market, mentioned in the Domesday Book, which is busy on Fridays.
There are some lovely walks in 1000-acre Cirencester Park, containing woodland and farms, nearly all open to the public, and one of the world's finest polo grounds. Its trees include beeches and a 5-mile avenue of chestnuts. Within walking range of the park are switchback lanes and wooded hills, among which lie a dozen pleasant villages, including Sapperton and Bisley.

Lechlade
A pretty town of Georgian houses, taking its name from the River Leach which wanders into the Thames beside the Trout Inn just below St John's Bridge. Lechlade Bridge, known as Halfpenny Bridge, from the days when there was a halfpenny toll, is the highest navigable point on the Thames for cabin cruisers. Old wharves, now lined with pleasure-boats, once catered for barges carrying stone to London for St Paul's Cathedral in the 17th century.
