Venues in Cornwall; hire a Jazz Band

This is a list of venues where you may want to hire one of our Jazz Bands for your Wedding, Party or Dinner. Our bands have already performed at many of these venues.

Prussia Cove

The cove, reached by a small track, was a notorious centre for smugglers, and John Carter, the leader, was known by his followers as 'The King of Prussia', after the hero of that time. In 1947 the battleship H.M.S. Warsfile went aground and broke up on the rocks in the cove; shipwrecks such as this earned the peninsula its name Penwith, from a Cornish word meaning 'promontory of blood'. Just round the eastern headland are Praa Sands, a popular bathing beach with a caravan site.

Newquay

The leading resort in this region. The 'new' quay dates from the i6th century, when it was found necessary to provide a new harbour for the prosperous fishing town of Towan Blystra. The town's livelihood depended on pilchards, and men called huers watched for shoals from cliff-top stations such as Huer's House on Towan Head. But tourism gradually replaced pilchard fishing after the arrival of the railway in 1876. Newquay's holiday pleasures include swimming, surfing, bird-watching, fishing and a zoo in Trenance Gardens. Trerice, 3 miles south-east, is a gabled, stone Elizabethan house, open to the public. It has fine plaster ceilings and latticed windows; the one in the main hall is made up of 576 panes of glass.

St Ives

The picturesque cluster of gaily coloured stone cottages, which seem to tumble over each other in the narrow twisting streets, attracted first artists, then tourists. St Ives grew around a small chapel built by St la in the 6th century. It was once a busy fishing port, but today most of the fishing is done by holiday-makers. The artists James McNeill Whistler and Walter Sickert went to St Ives in the last century and set the fashion that made the town internationally famous as an artistic centre. The painter Ben Nicholson, the sculptress Dame Barbara Hepworth and the potter Bernard Leach made the town a 'workshop' of contemporary art and the Penwith Gallery, founded in 1949, has frequent exhibitions of their work. The former home and study of Dame Barbara Hepworth is now open as a museum and art gallery.

St Just

The westernmost town in England, standing 1-3 miles east of Cape Cornwall, a fine rock headland. The town and its neighbourhood are rich in antiquities. In the large medieval church is a stone of the 5th or 6th century inscribed  with the monogram XP, the first two letters of the Greek word for Christ, and two restored wall-paintings, one of which depicts Christ 'blessing the trades'. By Bank Square is a round amphitheatre, about 50 yds in diameter, called Plain-an-Gwarry, or the 'place of the plays', where miracle plays were performed in the Middle Ages and wrestling matches held in the 18th century. About 2 miles north, near Botallack Head, are the derelict workings of the 19th-century Botallack mines, which had shafts following tin and copper lodes far out to sea.

Sennen

The westernmost village in England, with a church which is partly 13th century. Tradition has it that King Arthur, leading the forces of seven Cornish chieftains, routed the Danes here. To celebrate the event, the victors held a banquet on a large rock which became known as the Table Men. The rock stands at the end of a footpath about } mile north of the church.

Zennor

The village, named after St Senara, is a few hundred yards off the main road and less than a mile from the sea. The Norman church has a pew-end carving of 'the mermaid of Zennor', said to have come ashore to hear the squire's son sing and lured him back into the sea with her. The Zennor Quoit, half a mile south-cast, is a Stone Age tomb. It has seven stones, each 10 ft high, capped with a slab 6 yds long.
