Newent

Wild daffodils grow thickly around this old market town in spring; they have even colonised the central strip of the Ross Spur motorway. Near the town is a falconry centre where this ancient hunting art has been revived. The birds can be seen being handled, in ground training and at work in the sky. The 16th-century timber-framed market hall is well preserved and there are several 18th-century houses and a medieval spired church. The lead was removed from the church roof by the Royalists in 1644 during the Civil War, to make bullets to repel Roundhead attacks, and after a heavy fall of snow in 1674 the roof collapsed, destroying the nave. It was rebuilt after Charles II made a grant of 60 tons of wood from the Forest of Dean. Taynton House, 3 miles south, has three interesting barns, one of which dates from 1695.

St Briavels

This splendid walking centre high above the River Wye has one of the best-sited and most interesting youth hostels in Europe, a medieval castle with several 7oo-year-old fireplaces. Early English kings stayed in the castle when they came to hunt deer and wild boar. From the castle there are wonderful views across the Forest of Dean. Opposite the castle is a Norman church with an unusual Whit Sunday custom of giving out bread and cheese after service.

Speech House

A 17th-century house, built when the iron-founders moved into the Forest of Dean. It has a court-room used to settle disputes between them and the Foresters who lived by woodcutting and poaching. The court-room is now a hotel dining-room, but is still used ten times a year for official sittings of the Verderers' Court. The house stands in the centre of the forest near Cannop Ponds, which were dug in 1820 to provide a water supply for iron smelters. From Speech House a road leads towards Parkend and Lydney, south through the forest, and after 2 miles it runs below Fancy Tip, the tip of an old colliery now pleasantly overgrown with grass and broom. It is well worth a scramble to the top for the magnificent view across the great forest.

Abbey Dore

Fine examples of Early English architecture can be seen in the parish church, which was built from the chancel of a Cistercian abbey. The magnificent oak chancel screen was designed for Lord Scudamore in the I7th century by John Abel. The stonework of the choir and the 13th-century presbytery are impressive. Near by is a 14th-century farmhouse, The Grange.

Goodrich

The magnificent ruins of Goodrich Castle stand on a wooded hill overlooking the River \\ ye. The castle is square, with a tower in each corner; round it is a deep moat cut out of solid rock. The oldest part of the castle is its greystone keep, built in the late I2th century. From the T4th century it was the home of the Talbots, Earls of Shrewsbury, until it was destroyed by Cromwell's troops in the Civil War. The destruction of the castle was due to a mortar called 'Roaring Meg', which fired 200 Ib. balls, and this mortar has been preserved in Churchill Gardens, Hereford.
