Peterlee was built in the 1940s under the New Towns Act. It is east of the A19 near the Durham Heritage Coast and is north of Hartlepool. Nearby place names such as Blackhall Colliery and Shotton Colliery illustrate the rich mining history in the area.
The Apollo Pavillion is a Grade II listed bridge built in 1970. It is a striking structure which divides opinion. At one time there was a campaign to have it demolished.
