About Ryton

Ryton is in the Metropolitan Borough of Gateshead and is in the far west of Tyne and Wear, near the border with Northumberland. The area's economy was originally based on coal mining and agriculture.

The location of Ryton near the border with Scotland and near Hadrian's wall meant that it was a volatile are in history. It was reportedly attacked in 1297 by William Wallace and David II of Scotland in 1346.

Large houses in the area include The Grove, formerly Ryton Grove, which was built in the 18th century.
