The county of Lanarkshire in the early 1800's had rapidly progressed from cottage industries where small production quantities were produced by individual companies to centrally located large factories where the imported labor was being supplemented by steam powered machinery. Labor from Ireland was less skilled and and working conditions suffered in the availability of cheap labor. There was none of the paternalism in Glasgow, found in rural factories, family owned and served by generations of loyal spinners and weavers at hand looms.
