This town, whose name refers to the River Pont, is a market town north west of Newcastle city centre. It is quite near Newcastle International Airport.
The area around Ponteland was subject to conflict between the Scottish and English in the medieval period. There used to be a small castle there which was destroyed in 1388, and the 1244 Treaty of Newcastle was signed at Ponteland.
