As the NE61 postocde suggests, Morpeth is near Newcastle upon Tyne. It sits about 16 miles north of the city, and about 6 miles inland from Ashington. Morpeth is on the River Wansbeck.
The town is at a crossing point of the River Wansbeck and a stone axe found in the area suggests a long period of occupation. The name may refer to the fact that it was on the main road from England to Scotland.
Morpeth Castle was built in the 13th century on the site of an 11th century motte and bailey castle that had been burned down in 1216.
