Just south of the River Tyne near the A19 river crossing, Jarrow is a town with Roman history in the shape of a Roman fort, but also known for St Paul's Monastrey. This was a Benedictine double monastery dedicated to Saint Paul and Saint Peter which was the home of Bede (the Anglo Saxon scholar) in the 8th century.
The town greatly developed in the 19th century due to coal mining and ship building. The population was over 43,000 in 2011.
