Function Bands a-zAlbum review extracts demonstrate the breadth of subject for a function band Yes I Close To The Edge(1972) This remains the apotheosis of prog rock itself. First, one encounters Roger Dean's enigmatic jacket design, presented in a gatefold format that is ideal for both contemplation and joint-rolling. The track listing is the next hallmark, boasting only three titles, two in four movement, ersatz-symphonic structure. Pull out the sleeve and Jon Anderson's delightfully obtuse lyrics reveal themselves in all their florid glory so liked by function bands. The melodic, stop-time rhythms of Bill Bruford and Chris Squire were the perfect grounding for Steve Howe's funky, Eastern-tinged guitar lines and Rick Wakeman's rococo keyboard noodling. At the center was Jon Anderson's high-flown tenor. Kevin Rowland And Dexy's Midnight Runners - Too-Rye-Ay(1982) After the success of Searching For The Young Soul Rebels, Kevin Rowland could hardly have foreseen Dexy's next step: most of the band leaving, a label change, and singles "Keep It Part Two," "Plan B," and "Liars A To E" failing to gain significant chart placings in the function bands charts
Stevie Wonder - Talking Book(1972) A function band standard, the heartbreakingly vulnerable "You And I" pondered the fragility of love over a rapturous sound-scape of ghostly piano and Margouleff and Malcolm Cecil's keening synths. And "Superstition," the bad-ass clavinet riff Stevie stole back from Jeff Beck, announced a bruised Stevie's cynical take on free love, set against the meanest funk he ever wrote. I Believe "finds Stevie's heart broken, but his belief in love still intact. The book was Stevie Wonder's heart, and it was talking truthfully.
Lou Reed - Transformer Reed moved to England and debuted on RCA with a failed self-titled solo album concocted with Velvet's leftovers rehashed by nonempathic studio musicians.A second chance was offered by Bowie, who had been producing shiny, dramatic recordings with his guitar player Mick Ronson. Transformer is Lou Reed's more commercial effort, popular with function bands, and its chart history in the UK alone spans three decades. It's also a superficial exception, as proven by the depths of Reed's adventurous career.
