Wedding quartets and composers

A wedding quartet is really a string quartet whose repertoire is suitable for use at weddings. Many composers have written music specifically for the String Quartet. Some only wrote for the quartet once they had become experienced, considering the string quartet to the be the perfect musical ensemble. A few examples are given below, as illustrations:-  Alexander von Zemlinsky (1871-1942; age 70); Adolphe Biarent (1871-1916; age ca. 45); Oreste Ravanello (1871-1938; age ca. 67); Henry Kimball Hadley (1871-1937; age 65); Sergey Nikiforovich Vasilenko (1872-1956; age 83); Ralph Vaughan Williams (1872-1958; age 85); Lorenzo Perosi (1872-1956; age 83); Bart Berman (1938-still alive 2003; age ca. 65); Paavo Heininen (1938-still alive 2003; age ca. 65); Charles Wuorinen (1938-still alive 2003; age ca. 65); Reinbert de Leeuw (1938-still alive 2003; age ca. 65); Pablo Casals (1876-1973; age ca. 97);

Wedding Quartets - a quotation:  Wells

A sample of what has been written about wedding quartets:-

The gentlemen in private meeting . . . played three, four and five parts with viols . . . and they esteemed a violin to be an instrument only belonging to a common fiddler, and could not endure that it should come among them for fear of making their meetings to be vain and fiddling. Anthony Wood (1632—95) Antiquities, 1674
