Towns, cities and regions, such as Torquay have an influence on the style of music, whether it is the 'English Countryside' feel of Vaughan Williams, the strength of Elgar's Victorian Malvern, or the skirl of Northumbrian Pipe tune.
About Torquay
Torquay as we know it dates back to the end of the 18th Century, although the "little harbour" (Torre Quay) was there at the time of the Dissolution. In the early 18th Century the Royal Navy used the Bay for anchorage, and sailors and their wives and sweethearts were frequent visitors. Sometime before 1807 the first "town plans" were drawn up on behalf of Sir Lawrence Palk.
