Towns, cities and regions, such as Peterborough have an influence on the style of music, whether it is the 'English Countryside' feel of Vaughan Williams, the strength of Elgar's Victorian Malvern, or the skirl of Northumbrian Pipe tune.
About Peterborough
Peterborough began life as a saxon settlement. They built a village on the site of Peterborough called Medehamstede (meadow homestead). About 655 an abbey was built next to it. But this abbey was plundered by the Danes in 870 and then was abandoned. A new abbey was built in 972 and a village grew up nearby. About 1000 a wall was built around the settlement to protect it from marauding Danes. It was called St Peters burh. (Burh was the Saxon word for a fortified settlement).
