New castle upon Tyne is the regional capital and commercial heart of the North East of England. Today it is a busy modern city, but it has a long, proud and often violent past. The history of this great city is traced from its earliest origins, topics include the Roman and Medieval history of the city, the besieging of the town by the Scottish army during the English Civil War, and its 19th & 20th Century growth into a busy Trading Port and Centre of Industry and Commerce. Slum clearance and modern development have transformed much of the city, but there are still strong links with the past.
