Towns, cities and regions, such as Ledbury have an influence on the style of music, whether it is the 'English Countryside' feel of Vaughan Williams, the strength of Elgar's Victorian Malvern, or the skirl of Northumbrian Pipe tune.
About Ledbury
UNSPOILT by the passage of time, Ledbury must be one of the most romantic historic towns in England. Black and white buildings line the wide main street and give the atmosphere of life in Tudor times, yet the town is very much in touch with the present, and offers a varied programme of events. Ledbury is a market town which derives its name from the River Leadon which intersects the parish. It is an ancient borough, dating back to the Domesday Book, and returned members to Parliament in the reign of Edward I. The church of St Michael was founded before the Norman conquest and was mentioned in the Domesday Book. Once home to the poetess Elizabeth Barrett Browning (1806 - 1861), who spent her childhood days at Hope End, and to poet laureate John Masefield (1878 - 1967), Ledbury has strong links with the creative arts. The Ledbury Poetry Festival (July 3 -13) is now firmly on the literary calender and attracts some of the world’s most prolific writers, poets and actors as well as being a showcase for new talent.
