Horsham began as a Saxon village called horse ham. Ham is Saxon word for village. This one must have been famous for horses. Horsham is first mentioned in the 10th century. By the time of the Domesday Book (1086) By the 13th century Horsham had grown into a small town. For the first time it was described as a borough. However Horsham was tiny by todays standards with a population of only several hundred people.
