About  Harrow London   

The name Harrow derives from the Saxon 'hergae', meaning temple or shrine; it is believed that a pagan place of worship once topped the famous hill where the ancient Church of St Mary now stands. The earliest known reference to the town appears in a charter of 767AD and In 1086, when it was in the possession of the Archbishop of Canterbury, Harrow was listed in the Doomsday Book as the largest of the Middlesex manors. Thomas Beckett visited the town on several occasions, and shortly before his murder, excommunicated the town Rector for misappropriation of funds. Throughout the Middle Ages, the village grew in size and importance, and during the 13th to 16th Centuries a market and fair were regularly held in Crown Street and Middle Street. The thickly wooded areas of the hill and surrounding countryside provided good hunting and the King's Head pub, located on the hill, was frequently used by Henry VIII as a hunting lodge. The hill is also associated with Charles I, who, during the Civil War, stopped there to water his horses before surrendering to the Scottish army.
