Towns, cities and regions, such as Gateshead have an influence on the style of music, whether it is the 'English Countryside' feel of Vaughan Williams, the strength of Elgar's Victorian Malvern, or the skirl of Northumbrian Pipe tune.
About Gateshead
Gateshead's recorded history goes back at least to Roman times, when a bridge and gatehouse were built across the Tyne. Over 1,000 years later the borough played an important role in the Industrial Revolution, with ironworks, shipbuilding, pottery and glassmaking all featuring in the borough's economic past. Inventors George Stephenson (steam locomotive), Joseph Swan (incandescent electric light) and Charles Parsons (turbine generators) carried out many of their experiments in the town. Today, the history of Gateshead lives on at the Shipley Art Gallery's Made in Gateshead exhibition, a permanent display which documents the past and present manufacturing industries of the borough.
