About Forest Of Dean
The Forest of Dean, Formerly a royal hunting ground. the Forest of Dean occupies a triangular plateau between Gloucester, Ross-on-Wye and Chepstow, and comprises an area of 42 sq miles (including 28 sq miles of woodland) subject to ancient forest law. Writer Dennis Potter was born here (describing it as a heartshaped land’) and JRR Tolkien was a frequent visitor; the forestland is said to have inspired the setting for The Lord of the Rings. In 1978 it was designated a National Forest Park, the first in England.
