Towns, cities and regions, such as Chilterns have an influence on the style of music, whether it is the 'English Countryside' feel of Vaughan Williams, the strength of Elgar's Victorian Malvern, or the skirl of Northumbrian Pipe tune.
About Chilterns
Strictly speaking the Chiltern Hills run from Tring in the North East down to Reading on the Thames. Amersham is in the Chilterns, but not, apparently, Watford, and not Bushey. However, they are in a broad valley which borders the Chiltern Hills and bears a strong current of tradition. If you consider the links betwen the towns as leylines, be it the Metropolitan Line which used to run steam trains into London, or the Grand Union Canal, then you'll realise that there are cultural links which make this area unique. The link with Tring is the canal, with its history of working boats, and its love of folk dancing, folk lore and a back-to-the roots lifestyle for those who live or even holiday on it. Just walk a stretch and the constant panorama of narrowboats and barges reminds us of how happy everyone is getting away from it all.
